Hi,
i know there are several threads about this topic, but none solved my problem. I need to to connect wirelessly (iwl4965) to an access point with hidden ESSID at my University without encryption. Is there a comfortable way to do that? The gnome network-manager-applet doesn't seem to work with hidden ESSID. I installed wicd as an alternative but it's not working properly and it feels not as comfortable as nm-applet.

Try netcfg.
Though there's nothing comfortable about using an insecure wireless network (unless there's VPN over it...)

I tried netcfg today, but i havn't had luck. Wicd doesn't work anymore, too - this is weird because i didn't change anything. Is connecting to a hidden wlan such a big problem?
And yes, VPN is needed - but that would work if i could get a connection.

Have you tried:
ifconfig wlan0 up
iwconfig wlan0 essid [essid-name-here]
dhcpcd wlan0
Can't you just add the network somewhere in the gnome-network-manager or something?

I'm the type to fling myself headlong through the magical wardrobe, and then incinerate the ornate mahogany portal behind me with a Molotov cocktail.

I've just tried it, still no success: dhcpcd timed out.

Hey it worked today. I guess the kernel update solved this problem for me - yay!
