forgive me. im still new to this.
i want mplayer to always float and always be on top. ive got the float part down but not always on top.
the lua docs on the awesome site says that c.ontop = true is what i want to use. i just dont know where or how to add it.
here is my rc.lua file:

I don't know of a way to run a function when a certain type of client was created, but you can make a keybinding that does what you need. This will toggle the always-on-top status of the active client:
clientkeys = awful.util.table.join(
...
awful.key({ modkey, "Shift" }, "t", function (c) c.ontop = not c.ontop end),
...
)

i think it would be in here. i just dont know how to place it.
-- Check if the application should be floating.
local cls = c.class
local inst = c.instance
if floatapps[cls] then
awful.client.floating.set(c, floatapps[cls])
elseif floatapps[inst] then
awful.client.floating.set(c, floatapps[inst])
end
i dont mind if all floating apps are always on top. actually i would prefer it.

Well, it indeed has to go there.
-- Check if the application should be floating.
local cls = c.class
local inst = c.instance
if floatapps[cls] then
-- This is executed if the client is matched by class
awful.client.floating.set(c, floatapps[cls])
c.ontop = true
elseif floatapps[inst] then
-- This is executed if the client is matched by instance
awful.client.floating.set(c, floatapps[inst])
c.ontop = true
end
I didn't realize until now that this is in a hook (awful.hooks.manage), so I guess I learned more from you than the other way around
/e This way all floating apps will be always on top.
