How do you search in just one thread?

Is there a way to search for a word just in one thread alone and not in the whole forum? If the thread is only on one page I can use my browser find feature. But if the thread goes over many pages, this is difficult.

Thankyou very much.

Re: How do you search in just one thread?

Obviously best you can do is a forum based search.
To search a longer thread there appears no way than searching each page in turn. In firefox this is rather fast however using ctrl-f/ctrl-g.
Nevertheless it is awkward. roll mad

Re: How do you search in just one thread?

This might not work but I'm thiunking about maybe changing my forum preferences to have super long pages with maybe 200 posts on a page or something. That way I could use my browser's find feature to search just one thread or at least most of a thread. But I think maybe it would make pages load slower since they'd be so big.

As my husband says, if this is my biggest problem then i'm doing O.K. But still i'd like to figure out how to do it better.

yes some forums have an option to give back either topics or individual posts, that would be nice to have here. manually searching for text through a 30+ page "post your handy blah!" thread gets old pretty fast..

Re: How do you search in just one thread?

After several unsuckcessful attempts to search The Official  Hello Everyone Threat
for the word ´california´, I paid a short visit at punBB´s wiki pages.:(

I guess the first step to solve this problem should be to let good old BASH
process the searchstring, thus giving immediate access to all those nifty special
characters that the 20th century had to offer. like wildcards,
backquotes, pipes and such.

Not an easy task, if you hate markup languages like me.

i know it's not much help but i _believe_ someone posted a script on the "Handy scripts..." forum thread that did just that... if only we could somehow search just that thread for...

/edit: found it.  perhaps this is the best we have so far:

ROTFL

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 14#p473314 Somebody test this please, I'm going to bed right now. EDIT: OK, it's quite basic, but it works.

Edit: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 19#p534419 is a reply to the post found by brisbin33. Good night.

Re: How do you search in just one thread?

( ROTF, indeed, tying ourselves in knots .))

This might work as a hack, but the real goal should be to make the commandline resp. the searchstring
handle all those xml-qualifiers like id(=thread), pid(=post) etc that you can see in your browsers addressbar.

BTW: Kate and I would be glad all over the top, if we only could be using some EMACS-like editing tool
for simple corrections and quick posts as well.

Hi, bangkok_manouel!
cool

77.900 hits !!
lol:lol:
Yeah, or even better : go out on the streets and ask every person you see to answer
Miss California´s _excellent_ question.
big_smile:D:D

_:/_

Replacing the [_quote_]-tag above with the [_code_]-tag and after some twiddeling and fiddeling
and  begging and longing for EMACS and some sophisticated XML-debugger, look at this:

=bangkok_manouel--use google
http://www.google.co.th/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aunofficial&hs=JZ&q=search+many+pages+arch+linux+forum&btnG=Search&meta=

_:rolleyes:
Now a bit of cut&paste&copy using the mouse,  a second right arm the only thing missing, i apply the KISS principle and remove all unnecessary kokolores
or, as Stephen Hawking would call it,  l use Occam´s Razor ( hey there Stephen, live long and prosper!)

Re: How do you search in just one thread?

Alternatively you can use the forum search feature and pick just the forum you need (f.e.Laptop Issues) + use 'Sort by: Subject' option. It still searches to whole forum but once you find (ctrl+f) the right subject on the search results page it's all downhill.

i'll make it extremely simple just for you:
this thread http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=44507&p=1 has 50 pages.
if i search for (a) special term(s) inside this thread, let's say: size and taskbar, i'll use google search engine http://www.google.co.th/search?hl=en&sa … arch&meta= and it gives me what i was looking for. i hope you'll get it this time.

Be aware:  if we don´t stop this soon, we will overwhelm the internet.

So, let´s make terms clear:

What is a thread, what is a post, and what is the answer to Miss California´s question, we both want to hear?

Re: How do you search in just one thread?

A thread; a sequence of posts including the original post and all subsequent responses.
A post: an individual contribution from a user, which may or may not be at the start of a thread.

The answer to the OP's question (using the aforementioned thread #44507 and searchword 'taskbar' as an example):
Go to google.com, search for "44507 taskbar site:http://bbs.archlinux.org" or as a URL:
http://www.google.com/search?as_q=44507 … hlinux.org

Anyone who thinks there should be an equivalent feature built in to the forum should submit an appropriate feature request, ideally including a patch.

What is an OP.

I'm guessing it means "original poster", but I can be wrong. In this thread Miss California is the OP.
