how is it possible to select one or several files (ex: "nice book on postgresql.pdf") out of the many files included in a large (not single archive) torrent (ex: "obscene_number_of_web_ebooks.torrent") when using the rtorrent client? perhaps it would do to just make a simple script employing regex to modify the download targets listed therein? on top of the time spent waiting for huge downloads to complete, i want to avoid wasting personal and shared network resources to download a large number of files that i am going to delete immediately. TIA

Go to the file list and use the space-bar to change the individual file priority. Use * to change the priority of all files. Use / to collapse/expand the directories.
In your case, use * to change all file priorities to 'off' and then use the space-bar to turn back on the one file you do want.

Also look at http://libtorrent.rakshasa.no/wiki/RTorrentUserGuide (* and / are useful for large torrents)
And rtorrent will make 0 byte files even if you didn't select them.
