what do you like to listen to while you code?

hope this is alright to put here.

simple question. i almost always do acid techno/house or IDM. Mike Ink "Paroles" and Gescom "A1-D1" are particular coding favorites.

I don't really have any particular favorites, my music taste is hugely varied anyway, but things like Battles, Ratatat, Aphex Twin, or even Girl Talk can be nice to code to, and also any music that you can easily sing along to, and by easily I mean you won't have to think about it but it helps you to get into a groove so to speak smile

I like stuff without words for this purpose. On the more electronic side of things, Lunar is pretty good. For instrumental stuff, I've been enjoying Rob Costlow. Usually I only listen to the instrumental music if I've just woken up.

I don't really listen to different stuff when coding compared to otherwise. So I tend to listen to things from most genres as always.

Re: what do you like to listen to while you code?

I usually listen to music I don't have to think about, yeah -- which really cuts down my library. Specifically, no Tool sad tongue But when there is no music, there is no code. Or at least, it's very hard to produce.

Usually either heavier metal than I usually listen to, and stuff like Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Wolf Parade, Counting Crows, Philip Glass, soundtracks to games and animes (Death Note FTW), Machinae Supremacy, etc...

I don't have my music library fully set up yet, so Pandora has been awesome in providing me a place to listen to music from different artists and such that does not require stopping my train of thought and changing tracks smile

Wordless, ambient music (Nox Arcana, Mono, Die Verbannten Kinder Evas, etc). Music with words distracts me if I'm coding or reading. I listen to soundtracks quite often, too (Ergo Proxy currently).

For all you fellow Archers out there who like non-obtrusive electronic music:

I'd like to recommend www.di.fm's minimal and lounge channels. These are awesome
and non-obtrusive at the same time. There's few adverts once in a while and the sets
repeat over the day, but who cares with such minimalistic music wink

Have fun!

Re: what do you like to listen to while you code?

Music that cancels out the background noise without being too present.

I made you a playlist that samples some of what I have. It's all free (creative commons) music from Jamendo (a convenient source of daily fresh free music!). There's maybe 20hrs of material in there. Quality varies: some of it is only barely passable, and some of it is actually very good. You've probably never heard these songs before (most were released in 2008 & 2009). Here it is then:

http://www.jamendo.com/en/playlist/119702

Or, to get the list of mp3 streams directly: http://www.jamendo.com/get2/stream/trac … _asc&n=all

Thanks go to finferflu for introducing me to a lot of the artists in there!

Myself typing, with a slight touch of harddisk + PC-fan in the background and a lot of silence in the foreground.

But the construction site in front of my window is fine too, I guess.

Unfortunately Jamendo does not offer lossless downloads, I imagine due to the huge amount of bandwidth it would use.

Re: what do you like to listen to while you code?

depends a bit on time of day and location for me hmm

Early in the day or at uni I usually prefer metal of some sorts usually powermetal, Hammerfall and Masterplan comes to mind.
Later on I usually switch to anime soundtracks or other japanese music which makes me keep my brain active trying to translate, and later at night I switch to c64 remixes and other forms of game music. As few words as possible and lots of nice blipp-blopps..

Coding or reading for that matter without music makes me drowsy and not very productive so I tend to avoid silence at all costs tongue

Nothing with vocals that I understand. If I don't understand the vocals (for example, Japanese), I automatically don't listen to them and don't get distracted.

Re: what do you like to listen to while you code?

Hi!

Music is my primary goal of living; I am music.

When I´m _listening_ then there is nothing else but the music, be it
J.S.Bach, Frank Zappa, John Cage or these pieces of mine.

Anywhen else I´m just _hearing_, because I´m not deaf  and cannot close my ears as easily as my eyes.
When I need to be highly focused and concentrated, any music is mere noise, so silence is essential.
Especially when coding my own music, these ´Moments of Silence´ can last for _years_!

But there has never(!) been even a femto-second that I´ve been without music.

Re: what do you like to listen to while you code?

I don't listen to any special kind of music when I am coding, it tends to be the same music that I am usually listening too. It also depends on my mod if I am listening on music at all when I am coding, sometimes I just prefer silence.
