[SOLVED]Some websites don't like "gran paradiso",how can I trick them?

Hello, certain websites insist that I MUST use "firefox version 3.5a blah blah" or whatever it is at the moment.  How can I get their sites to accept that "gran paradiso" is not some demonic web browser that will harm my own computer, their servers, and the entire fabric of the universe?  Is there a way to change how "gran paradiso" reports itself to them?

Also, didn't I see somewhere that Mozilla are "graciously" going to allow the archlinux firefox package to be actually called firefox soon?

And finally, is there a way to install the "official" firefox on arch at the moment?

Thanks in advance!

There is the User Agent Switcher extension that should deal with that.

Hoho, I thought someone might have a neat little trick like that!  Excellent, thank you very much Allan!

Or just type in your address bar:

about:config

and look for general.useragent.extra.firefox and change its value from Gran Paradiso to Firefox. That worked for me for installing Google Gears.

I see you are all familiar with this problem!

With that last method (about:config) do I need to enter a firefox version number too?

I don't know - did you? smile
And if you did - link please.

AUR, I expect - or just grab some precompiled thing from mozilla.org.

Yes, I did read that I'm sure.  I believe I read it on these very forums.  It was something about how Mozilla didn't care about the miniscule changes needed for archlinux and were going to let us all use real, genuine firefox.  I shall look for the link...

Here you go, it's a bit old though...

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=53672

Funnily enough, I can use "Arora" on the site(s) in question, a browser in beta phase that I only just heard of.  And yet it bans gran paradiso, a browser that differs from firefox in name only as far as I can tell.

That forum post concludes the opposite...  that it would be too much effort to ask Mozilla for permission.

Oh, I'm sorry, I just read the bit about "got a yes".

I do need to pay more attention, it's true...

Hey, at least I don't type "sudo chmod +s /sbin/mount" as a regular user anymore.  That caused me some problems, I can tell you...

I kept the one that was already there, i.e. my string is Firefox/3.0.10.

Hmm.  Didn't work for me.  The site is www.gmx.co.uk, in case anyone feels like trying it out.

Edit- it does work, I'm stoopid, thank you muchily, case closed!

Yeah, Mozilla got grumpy(er) about branding since 2005...

At the bottom-right of your post there is a series of links.  Click the edit one on the first post in the thread.

BTW, welcome to Arch!

"BTW, welcome to Arch!"

Why thank you very much!  I've been here for about 6 months now.  This is the best operating system I ever used.  It's a bit hard, but you learn something more about linux every day.  People say it's not a noobs distro, well, I was a noob when I started it, I had almost no knowledge of linux, now I can do some pretty cool stuff.  I can use fstab!  I can configure xorg!  I even wrote a "program" the other day!  A pretty crappy program, but a program nonetheless!
