Wireless Network can't be found, although it does exist

Hi there,

trying to connect to the wifi at my girlfriend's place, neither networkmanager nor iwlist scan were able to find the network there. I am totally sure the network was up, because she was sitting next to me, surfing using the network. Any ideas or suggestions how to find the network?
