network problem during installation

I've decided to try Archlinux, which seems like a nice distro.

I downloaded the latest ftp-installer for an usb-stick, which booted up fine and entered the installation program. However, when setting up the network I ran into some trouble:

In installation program:
0 Setup Network -> Network interface: eth0 -> DHCP: Yes

OR manually:
[root@archiso arch]# dhcpcd eth0

=>
eth0: dhcpcd 4.0.10 starting
eth0: broadcasting for a lease
eth0: timed out

I've also tried to assign the computer a static address (in the range 10.0.1.x) and pinging broadcast, but got no response. I can see the TX indicator blink on the network adapter when pinging/dhcpcd'ing, so something is obviously happening, but it doesn't work. (It has worked with other linux distros, and the currently dual installed w2k)

Any help in fixing/diagnosing the problem is appreciated!

Another (unresolved) thread with a similar problem is here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=74664, but I did not want to hijack his thread.

Some info:
It's an Euronote 740 laptop (some years old)

[arch@archiso ~]$ dmesg | tail -n 5
eth0: Xircom: port 0x300, irq 3, hwaddr 00:10:a4:06:ee:03
pcmcia 0.1: pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia0.1
0.1: ttyS3 at I/O 0x2e8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
eth0: MII link partner: 8de1
eth0: MII selected
eth0: media 100BaseT, silicon revision 5
[arch@archiso ~]$ lspci | grep CardBus
00:08.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1251B
00:08.1 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1251B

Local network is behind a router which acts as a dhcp server (addresses: 10.0.1.x). It could of course be a configuration issue in the router, but no other computer is suffering similar problems.

Thanks in advance!

Re: network problem during installation

Is your router's dhcp-pool wide enough? Probably it is but it woudn't hurt to check anyway (much like checking if plug is still in the outlet—same class of test wink). I'd also check the cable (is it working with other comps?) and router's port (try to plug cable into another port). If it all checks then I'd think of something else but I'd start from that.

As for network card description do:

lspci | grep -i -e 'network\|ether'

It's not the best thing when they call you a "member" you know… wink

Re: network problem during installation

The dhcp-pool should be wide enough to support 199 computers (and I'm not there quite yet wink). The cable/port works for other computers AND for this one when I boot another OS.

Ah, I confused the pcmcia slots with the pcmcia card. Anyway, your lspci-command returned nothing (expected for pcmcia-cards?). It's a Xircom CreditCard Ethernet 10/100+ Modem 56 (Xircom CEM56-100). Old like the computer, but I believe it is working.
