Whenever I use a media player that doesn't use arts as its sound output, I get no sound. I always get a message 'Can't open /dev/sound/dsp(or some alsa device node, depending on whether I choose OSS or ALSA) Device or resource busy'.
It seems that arts is occupying every all sound systems. Outside kde I do have sound. I tried to disable the kde sound system in the kde control center, but still a no go.
modules: snd-intel8x0 and snd-pcm-oss
Arch current
Anyone has a solution, exept not to use KDE?

Try loading the following modules: snd-mixer-oss, snd-seq-oss

isn't there an option somewhere in kcontrol to turn off arts after a choosen time?
arch + gentoo + initng + python = enlisy

Thanks! That did the trick. I somehow totally overlooked that option.
btw. on my desktop pc, I arts never took full control of my sounds. I could run xine and amarok simultaniously. Is there a way to fix this?
I already had those modules loaded, btw.

I don't use kde at the moment so I don't have a clue,
do you mean that they mix their output?
it never happened to me but I used juk,
arch + gentoo + initng + python = enlisy

No, the problem was that I get any sound output from a prog that doesn't use artsd. This was solved by automatigically letting arts disable itself after x seconds. But now I am in a situation where I can only use one sound system at a time.
For example, I can't watch a movie with mplayer (that directly uses alsa/oss) and let KDE make sounds when closing windows (through arts).

artsd = bad
Thank you for this totally useless post.
Do you have another without dropping KDE?

I think everytime someone says artsd = bad, it brings artsd (= bad) closer to death.
So artsd = bad. Isn't a useless post, even if everyone knows it.
fffft!
