Running Arch Linux on an Acer Aspire 4720z. I got wireless to work with the broadcom-wl package, using either netcfg or wlassistant. After going on vacation for about a week, I returned to find that wireless no longer worked. Netcfg says that it connects, but a ping quickly says host not found (same with other tools). A normal iwconfig eth0 essid "Wireless" also says it connects, but also fails a ping. Connecting using wl fails citing wpa_ctr_open error for the main network, and for an unprotected says stderr: Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A). iwlist scan works, netcfg and iwconfig seemingly connect, but in the end they all fail when it comes to actually working.
Any help would be appreciated.

Did you see this thread about netcfg? If you have updated, it may provide some clues.

But what does netcfg have to do with a normal iwconfig connection? Does it? And where can I get the package without wireless.

well netcfg probaly uses iwconfig to make a connection with a wireless network. look in the pacman log if you have updated your driver , so you know it's not a driver issue and you could check if connecting works with maybe wicd , just to check if netcfg isnt broken.
