Switch from /dev/vc to /dev/tty on v.p.s.

The Aug. '09 /dev/vc to /dev/tty switch gives errors on a v.p.s.
It's a barebones Arch Linux server on OpenVZ, boots to console.
I can login over SSH.  Here's /var/log/errors.log -

  Aug  4 XX:XX:XX XXXXX agetty[XXXX]: /dev/ttyX: not a character device

For all ttys.  Then I do a file check,

  file /dev/ttyX
/dev/ttyX: ASCII text, with no line terminators, with escape sequences

Shouldn't it be, "character special" or symlink?  What's with ASCII?

I read and followed instructions at
http://www.archlinux.org/news/454/

Is this some kind of udev issue?
