LVM Downsides?

Even though I only have one large drive, I am considering experimenting with doing an Arch Linux install using LVM. Is the any downsides to using LVM over standard partitioning? For example, it is harder to recover data when LVM is involved? Or to access data from a boot CD in an emergency?

Thank you.

Re: LVM Downsides?

The wiki has some good specifics on LVM.

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LVM

Other than what the wiki says, I'm not sure of any 'real' downsides to it.

which would you choose: A god that never answers you or a society that embraces you?

Re: LVM Downsides?

RagePie - by all means, read the forum thread posted by perbh, but remember that it's just one user's experience, and the problem is mainly due to that user's lack of recent linux experience. LVM, like any other setup, requires planning, but once that's done, it works very well IMO. Rad the wiki, man pages, and google for other more relevant user feedback.

Re: LVM Downsides?

IMHO, any downsides like being more complicated to recover data from, higher risk of data loss (data is striped like RAID-0, so one disk failing screws the lot if you have multiple disks) are outweighed by the benefits.

Then again, I'm paranoid about backing up, so recovery it "go to the backup" for me, not "uh oh, I hope I can make this work again"
