What's happened to Wicd? v1.6.x stalls but v1.5.9 is good

Over the last few weeks I've seen quite a few threads about Wicd problems which seem to be associated specifically with the upgrade to the version 1.6 series rather than other upgrades (such as the kernel). On my own systems (desktops and laptops), a particular problem keeps arising when I swap wireless networks; the Wicd client hangs with the status message:

Disconnecting active connections...

If I kill the client and restart the daemon (and hal/dbus), I can sometimes bring the thing back to life, but it's not clear what happening, and nothing much is logged. However, if I try to reconnect to a wired network rather than a wireless one, it works. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the various Wicd v1.6.x packages, and also completely removing the /etc/wicd directory too. It always works for a while then ends up jammed when I swap networks a few times.

However, Wicd 1.5.9 does seem to work reliably, and on checking the Wicd forum at http://wicd.sourceforge.net/punbb/ it looks as though others have found this too. It doesn't look like an Arch or hardware-specific problem, but does anyone else have a better handle on what's going wrong with Wicd? It used to be such a reliable network manager, well ahead of the competition in its stability and ease of use. hmm

<bump> I'm surprised that this post has had 54 views, but no replies.
Please don't tell me that everyone else now has Wicd 1.6.x working beautifully!

Aaaah, another malcontent!
I used networkmanager briefly quite a while back when I flirted with Gnome, but for reasons I can't recall, found Wicd better for my various setups. Any current pros and cons of Wicd versus networkmanager which you would like to share? wink

I'm still on wicd 1.5.9 because of various problems (not working pre/post-connection scripts beeing one of them, unstable connections and or no conncting at all beeing another). Hopefully 1.6.x will become as stable as the 1.5.9 was soon.

Just one con that i was able to resolve. I didnt like having to enter a password to unlock the gnome keyring everytime. I'm using kde / kdm I was able to bypass this using pam-keyring-tool from AUR. See the networkmanager entry in the wiki:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Net … fter_login

I'm experimenting with ad-hoc mode and believe networkmanager has better support than wicd for this.

I managed to make it work by doing this in a terminal:

sudo /etc/rc.d/wicd stop
sudo rm /etc/wicd/*.conf
sudo /etc/rc.d/wicd start

Hope this work for you!
