Swapping A Server Head Unit?

Hello All,

Is anybody able to point me in the direction of (or tell me) how the device ID's work in Linux?

My setup is as follows:
1 x Server Head Unit - Contains motherboard, RAID card, CPU etc
4 x Disk arrays - Simple box containing many hard disks (JBOD).

Essentially the server head unit is becoming too slow to perform the task and I need to swap it for a new server. The issue is that I need to maintain the data on the disk arrays and be able to mount them on the new server. I was hoping that I would be able to do this by simply connecting the disk arrays to the new head and copying the relevant /etc/fstab entries to the new server. At the moment the partitions are mounted using device ID values and I was wondering if these would be persistent across the two server units or will they be dependent on the specific machine that generated the ID's.

I am unsure if these ID values are generated then stored on the partitions themselves or if they are stored within the Operating System somewhere.

Can someone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks,
