You can send mail, but I don't know about recieving it. SMTP server's sometimes perform lookups, and if you don't have an associated MX record, it might not work.
*shrug* maybe someone else will know better than I will...
Domains are very cheap by the way, and you can get free dns hosting from zoneedit.com

Not having an associated MX record isn't a big deal. It just goes to whatever the actual host is then.
