nginx: Why html and logs directories are placed in /etc/nginx?

I've just installed nginx, just for curiosity, and it is very strange that the HTML pages and the logs of the NGINX server are places in the /etc/nginx directory. I'm just a newbie in Linux but that hurts my eyes. What's the reason for that?

They are symlinks to actual directories.
