Recommended Software

So I've installed Arch. Things are a little different than what I'm used to. Searched around the forums a little and havn't really found any threads about recommended software.  So lets start a list. So what are some recommended Text Editor, Terminal, IDE, Media Player, Archive Managers, Rippers, Converters, Video editor, Recording software, Games, Image Viewer, Image Editor, Video Capture, Desktop Search Engine, ect ect.

Re: Recommended Software

The philosophy behind Arch is there are no "recommended" applications. You build your Linux system as you see fit: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/The_Arch_Way

You should read this: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Common_Applications
and this: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lig … plications

Philosophy is looking for a black cat in a dark room. Metaphysics is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there. Religion is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there and shouting "I found it!". Science is looking for a black cat in a dark room with a flashlight.

Re: Recommended Software

The thing about arch is it's all up to you.  If you go to the Wiki:

There's loads of stuff...

Re: Recommended Software

What are you used to?

If you are used to something like Ubuntu, you could always just install those same applications. (start by installing the entire GNOME collection)

If you are used to Windows or Mac OS, how did you find software for those? If you would go to a website that allowed you to search a collection of Windows or Mac OS software, you can pretty much do the same thing with the pacman package manager.

You can find all of the Arch packages online here: http://www.archlinux.org/packages/ Pacman (and that website) can show you a link to the home page of any software project, where you can get more information about it. It's super quick to install anything with pacman, find out you don't like it, and then uninstall it. big_smile Repeat until you find something that suites you.

If you are used to BeOS, Syllable, or MenuetOS, I'm sorry, I don't know how to help you, but you rock! yikes

If you are coming from MSDOS, then I'm sorry, I still can't help you. And you don't rock. sad

Yeah but there is not rating of any software in repository. Am I expected to install, config, and install every package till I find things I like? then what I'm left with the clean up of everything? This is highly inefficient and archaic.

Unfortunately, we can't tell you what you will like - so you are best trying a few and learning from the experience. Pacman will keep your system clean (if you use it properly)...

Your other option would be to try some various Live Linux CD's from other distros and try out the applications on those CD's and make your decision as to what you prefer. Or, if you like to be a follower, you could leave the decisions to others and do some googling with keywords such as "best linux multimedia apps" etc, etc...or read this: http://ubuntulinuxhelp.com/top-100-of-t … lications/  (but that list may be slightly skewed towards very easy-to-use, heavyweight, eye-candyfull, GUI software beloved of Ubuntu users ;-))

No, it's dynamic, everyone can tailor their own system. If that's not your thing, you can always use a more preconfigured distro.

Re: Recommended Software

I'm going to go ahead and generalise by saying most Arch users prefer lightweight apps and window managers so I recommend you take a look at the thread jasonwryan posted.

That's just blasphemy ! We do not rate one software over another. Every software built, is good for atleast 1 person (the developer). You don't like something, Move on to the next.

Yes you are. We think that's where the fun is.

Au contraire, this helps you in learning what the heck it is you are doing. You find out what files the application uses and can control the app to the nth degree. This IMHO, makes YOU, the user, quite efficient at what you are doing and at Linux as a whole. Think about it.
