We now have 4 ArchLinux machines scattered throughout the house. (My wife is an Archer now!). I am looking for a simple fast GUI LAN chat application. I looked at "qchat" but it is a bit cumbersome and doesn't have the option of a small applet to the panel. Any recommendations appreciated...

what about just running a jabber/irc server? (assuming that you have some sort of server running anyway)

you can try trix chat, its a vypress chat clone for linux, works pretty well, and has the option for sending files as well.

I just tried it with a few machines and it works fine.

I would just use Pidgin, and create a "bonjour" account. You should be able to just run the avahi-daemon, which should make everything "just work". You will be able to see each machine in your buddy list automatically.

Excellent choice! Nice, light and unobtrusive. Works well, thanks for the recommendation.
