OS option - BIOS

Hello,

I'm about to install Arch Linux. In my computers BIOS there is a "Installed OS" setting, which can be set to some windows versions eg. "WinXP" but also "Other". There is no Linux option. I was wondering what effect this setting might have?, not that I have experienced any problems so far.

Best regards

Re: OS option - BIOS

I'm not sure if I should create a new thread about this but when I try to write my partition scheme, it says "No primary partition is marked bootable. DOS MBR cannot boot this". I thought it was unnecessary to make a partition bootable when running Linux?

The warning is just a warning.  You can safely ignore it.

Well, i have no idea but you can always try reading your mainboards manual.

Re: OS option - BIOS

That BIOS option is probably like the old OS: [DOS] / [OS/2] / [Other] option.
Simply set it to DOS, so in your case that would be "WinXP", will work fine.
And you can always experiment, you have the machine, we don't. It wont break down or anything.

Re: OS option - BIOS

I've had a few old PIIIs that had an explanation for that section, which stated to use "Other" when using a UNIX OS, which I vehemently obeyed and it works fine.

Re: OS option - BIOS

I always use the "Other" option - I think it just makes some changes to how the ACPI is presented to the OS... But I stand to be corrected...
