vpn but no internet

Hello guys,

I have the following setup:

home computer [212.244.23.4] -> [81.43.55.43] VPN server [172.16.3.5] ->[172.16.3.19] firewall [192.168.0.5] -> internal network

When I connect to the VPN server using my VPN client to get to the internal network, everything is just fine, but then when I want to go on the internet, I am blocked.

Do I have to have another separate "outgoing" internet connection on a separate physical port of the firewall or VPN server to be able to use the VPN and internet simultaneously? In other words: does internet not work because I am in a "one-way-street" when connecting and it's therefore impossible to get back out to the internet once I have VPN'ed in, unless there is another exit door to the internet?

Would an alternative be installing a proxy on the internal network and using that as my "gateway" when VPN'ing in and trying to use the internet at the same time?

Thanks for clearing that up for me! (no, I don't want to enable split tunneling) I am kind of a newbie with VPN's and want to know if I understood this right.

Re: vpn but no internet

Before vpn, show the output of

route -n

once you have vpn'ed to the machine, show the outputs of

route -n
ifconfig tun0/tap0 (whichever you're using)
