I know how to get my system up and running, but what are the main packages I need afterwards?
I am about to reinstall Arch, because it's speed was great.
I just need to know what packages I need after installing other than my DE.
Network-manager didn't install the applet I wanted in the taskbar, so I tried installing libnotify, etc, and none of that worked?
What do you usually install after a fresh install?
Thanks. (:

I've looked there already. It didn't help much for the network manager applet part.
Thanks though. (:

The wiki has a search function on the left hand side.
Try this:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Network_manager

You want network-manager-applet. Seriously, finding that took about one second with pacman -Ss.
# Ooh. Too slow.

Thank you for your kindess.
I actually already knew that, but it doesn't show up in the notification area. Not even when I run it from the terminal.
So there.

Did you read this: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Net … ager#Gnome
, especially the part about adding a Notification Area to the Panel (right click on the panel)...

OK, show us the output of the following commands run from a terminal:
ps aux | grep -i network
cat /etc/rc.conf | grep -i DAEMONS

If you want network manager, you need to use the networkmanager daemon instead of network.

Ohhh. Okay. Thanks a ton!
I believe I see you on Ubuntu Forums too right?
EDIT: It works now!

Yes I do have an account at the Ubuntu forums. Also change your thread title so it says Solved.

usually, whenever I use gnome I install:
browser and flash / java plugin: pacman -S chromium flashplugin jre
ftp client: filezilla (or bareftp)
mediaplayer: pacman -S smplayer
archive manager and requirements: pacman -S file-roller unzip unrar b7zip
irc client: pacman -S xchat
IM client: pacman -S pidgin
image viewer: pacman -S eog
pdf reader: pacman -S xpdf
basic music player: pacman -S audacious
ntfs read / write support: pacman -S ntfs-3g
editor with language support: pacman -S scite
mpd + sonata looks well on gnome as well, but I would avice you to read the wikipages on mpd before you go there.

Hey Gymophett, I had issues making it work too.
One thing you MUST do is read the begginer's guide word for word from scratch! Did you do that?
Then proceed with the ArchWiki pages: HAL, NetworkManager, Daemon, Gnome, and whatever other app you have installed as per the Beginner's Guide.
If you follow these pages step by step, you'll notice even the tiniest modifications to your settings.configurations can make a big difference!
For example, hal MUST be loaded before Network manager in your "DAEMONS=..." string in rc.conf. This detail, along with other details, will be on those wiki pages and you have to do EXACTLY what they say.
Hope you can fix it!
EDIT: I didn't read everything, i see you fixed it! And it was as simple as just adding "manager" into your daemons.
