Strange behavior with wireless LAN [SOLVED]

After upgrading to kernel 2.6.32 I started to suffer a strange behavior with wireless LANs.

I mean:
- I have a computer with two operating systems: Archlinux and Windows 7, in a separate configuration (2 HDD).
- I use a Realtek 8187 card (USB card ALFA NETWORK model AWUS036H).

With a network that has a signal stregth more than 85% I have no problems, both Arch and Windows can connect and navigate. The problem is when I connect to a network that is down the 70%, then starts:

With Windows 7, I have no problems to navigate, good speed, considering the signal. But with Arch is completely impossible to navigate, Firefox is always trying to resolve, but it never happens, I started pacman and I get a lot of "Transient resolver failure" messages. I have tried with different DNS servers, without luck.

Back to Windows without changing anything, and I can navigate without problems.

Any idea?

Thanks,
Juan.

Re: Strange behavior with wireless LAN [SOLVED]

do you have a valid ip, default route set up for the low-signal network, are the different machines replying to pings for the low-signal network?

Re: Strange behavior with wireless LAN [SOLVED]

I can get into the router, sometimes with problems, as the message "Cannot resolve..." appears, but if I reboot into Windows (it takes about 1 min.) I can navigate and access the router without problems.

My problem always happens in Archlinux.

Re: Strange behavior with wireless LAN [SOLVED]

what about if you move your router a bit closer for > 85% signal, or try to move back from the good quality wireless network so you get < 70% signals, do both networks work under these circumstances?

Re: Strange behavior with wireless LAN [SOLVED]

I'll try. But my question is:

Why Windows can navigate and Arch not?

Thanks.

Re: Strange behavior with wireless LAN [SOLVED]

Hi,

I made the test Sin.Citadel asked for:

Being associated to the router I have signal >85% I moved the computer so I get a signal <70%. With Windows 7 no problems at all, I can navigate (not so fast, but I can navigate). However, using Arch, I cannot, I get a lot of problems with resolver, cannot connect, pacman says transient resolver failure.

Any ideas? Could be due to the Linux driver?

Right now, I'm writing this post from Windows, because with Arch it was impossible.

Regards.

Re: Strange behavior with wireless LAN [SOLVED]

More information I can add:

Same distance, same computer, same conditions:

ArchLinux: Strength of the network 54-58% (Average)

Windows 7: Strength of the network 68-72% (Average)

Any idea?

Thanks

Re: Strange behavior with wireless LAN [SOLVED]

Show "iwconfig yourwlaninterface" output with connected AP.
Also try to play with given values:

# iwconfig wlan0 power off
# iwconfig wlan0 txpower auto or on
# iwconfig wlan0 sens n

where n is lower than SIgnal level in "iwconfig yourwlaninterface" output.

Re: Strange behavior with wireless LAN [SOLVED]

Today I have started the diagnostics, now I don't have the ouptut of iwconfig wlan0, I should reboot into Arch to get it and save it. I will put the output as soon as I can.

However, the output of the commands you wrote:

# iwconfig wlan0 power off
Set operation failed, not permitted.

# iwconfig wlan0 txpower auto or on
No answer.

# iwconfig wlan0 sens n
Set operation failed, not permitted.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Re: Strange behavior with wireless LAN [SOLVED]

The behavior of the connection performs almost the same as Windows when setting the following:

"iwconfig wlan0 rate 24M fixed"

as the wiki says.
