Are firewire camera's universal?

I've got a Digital video camera (Samsung VP-D353) which does not work under Linux using usb. The camera does however support firewire.
Is it true that firewire is universal, so that all firewire cameras work with Linux?

(I'm so broke this week that I do not want to spend money on a cable in vain wink)

Thanks

Re: Are firewire camera's universal?

I think it depends on the camera and what protocol it speaks across the firewire... For example, Sony camera's use the "iLink" system.

FTR, I plugged a Sony into my laptop and ripped 6 MiniDV tapes without any issues other than having to install an app to handle the transcodiing (ffmpeg IIRC)

I stand to be corrected -- I've never dug that deep into this stuff (yet), but I'd interested if you find a better answer.

I have no experience with this but I'm almost certain that you will have the same issues with firewire as USB. Essentially both are just methods to connect to the computer. It's all about how you interface with it.
