[solved] wireless connection keeps dropping!

hi

after a bit of help getting my newly acquired wireless card running, I am noticing that the network keeps dropping, yet  a windoze machine with the exact setup has no issues! sad

My router is a Netgear WGR614V9 on the G protocol
My card is a Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88x8335 [Liberta02.11b/g Wireless (rev 0) which is Netgear as well.

As there is no native driver for it on linux, i am using ndiswrapper and the windoze driver, and using wicd to manage the network, which works really well.

anyone else have a similiar issue, or know any solutions?

thanks

Re: [solved] wireless connection keeps dropping!

I have had a similar problem with a Broadcam wifi card, only with native linux drivers. Could you be a bit more specific, like post the output of:

# iwconfig (your interface)

both before and after your connection drops.

In my case it helped to write a little shell script that pings a high uptime server every 10 minutes or so, to ensure my connection doesn't time out. It doesn't happen at every network though in my case. How long does it take on average for the connection to drop after you initially connected? And does it happen when your not using internet or just randomly?

Having said that, you could check if powersaving is enabled for your card and disable it. You could also try to connect to a different network or disable security (if any) and see if the problem persists. Otherwise it might well be a ndiswrapper issue.

Re: [solved] wireless connection keeps dropping!

I have a similar problem. I use the following card (output from lspci):
00:09.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)

I use the B43 driver and have the firmware installed. I use netcfg 2.5.4-1 with a slight modification; When it detects that the connection has gone down it automatically tries to reconnect. This works fine most of the time. But I would really like the problem to go away.

This is an entry from kernel.log, and it seems to happen like every 20minutes (perhaps making your theory about powersaving worth investigating), sometimes more often I think:
May  6 18:19:52 vekta kernel: No probe response from AP <addr> after 500ms, disconnecting.

I actually didn't have any problem in december 2009 when I first installed arch.

Edit: Actually, the connection drops seems pretty irregular to me, here are a few more entries from kernel.log with timestamps:
May  6 15:30:20 vekta kernel: No probe response from AP <addr> after 500ms, disconnecting.
May  6 16:18:55 vekta kernel: No probe response from AP <addr> after 500ms, disconnecting.
May  6 16:19:55 vekta kernel: No probe response from AP <addr> after 500ms, disconnecting. // yay, connection lasted almost a minute!
May  6 16:35:04 vekta kernel: No probe response from AP <addr> after 500ms, disconnecting.
May  6 16:37:02 vekta kernel: No probe response from AP <addr> after 500ms, disconnecting.
May  6 17:05:41 vekta kernel: No probe response from AP <addr> after 500ms, disconnecting.
May  6 17:19:44 vekta kernel: No probe response from AP <addr> after 500ms, disconnecting.
May  6 17:26:30 vekta kernel: No probe response from AP <addr> after 500ms, disconnecting.
May  6 18:03:45 vekta kernel: No probe response from AP <addr> after 500ms, disconnecting.
May  6 18:19:52 vekta kernel: No probe response from AP <addr> after 500ms, disconnecting.
May  6 18:57:17 vekta kernel: No probe response from AP <addr> after 500ms, disconnecting.

Re: [solved] wireless connection keeps dropping!

I have similar issues when connecting to the network at school. I'm investigating it and will post if I find a solution. On networks that work well I use netcfg, but I've noticed that using wicd on the network with issues works better.

The network itself is a combination of many Access Points, which have different mac addresses and use different channels. With wicd I'm able to select a certain AP with a good channel (6 or 11), this also reduces the chance of connection drops.

Here is my iwconfig on the moment that the connection is active and working.

wlan0     IEEE 802.11abg  ESSID:"YYY Internet"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.462 GHz  Access Point: 00:1C:0F:4D:03:40
          Bit Rate=54 Mb/s   Tx-Power=15 dBm
          Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=48/70  Signal level=-62 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

Re: [solved] wireless connection keeps dropping!

And now the connection has dropped, here is its iwconfig

wlan0     IEEE 802.11abg  Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.462 GHz
          Access Point: Not-Associated   Tx-Power=15 dBm
          Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off

Does anyone know what happened?

Re: [solved] wireless connection keeps dropping!

I also have this issue with a 4312 broadcom card, and I've come to accept that the driver is to blame. This is a big improvement though, because before I couldn't even connect to an AP:cool: still sucks though

Re: [solved] wireless connection keeps dropping!

after spending some time trying to fix the problem with my b43 card (Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01) on HP ProBook 5310m) I found the solution and now the card is working pretty stable.
The problem was that each time 6 seconds after each AP association  the connection was dropped with this error in the dmesg:

No probe response from AP xxxxxxxxxxxxx after 500ms, disconnecting

The fix is to disable the QOS of the driver.

sudo touch /etc/modprobe.d/b43.conf
echo "options b43 pio=1 qos=0" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/b43.conf

thanks to chenxiaolong

P.S. The QOS setting depends of the processor, for some it have to be 1

QOS on --> Intel Core Duo, Intel Atom
QOS off --> Intel Core Solo, Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3/i5/i7, and AMD

Re: [solved] wireless connection keeps dropping!

thanks lubo777! This seems to have done the trick, but my connection is known to keep stable for 8hours+ and then suddenly disconnect (it can also connect and disconnect in a loop like described here)

the speed still sucks.. 1mb/s... my other Windows laptop is on the other side of the house (the router is on the ground floor and the laptops are on the first floor) and not only does it get a 100% strong signal, it gets 54mb/s speeds. *broadcom.. sigh*

EDIT: nop... still drops, less frequently though, but maybe that's just me.

I have Core 2 Duo and with qos=0 the card is working almost stable ... but not much smile

sudo iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M

Hmm, actually, when I use 54M it doesn't connect, but 11M works fine.  Better than 1M.

Re: [solved] wireless connection keeps dropping!

I have a "4315" Broadcom wireless card and this "pio=1 qos=0" thing seemed to fix the aforementioned wireless disconnects I have also been experiencing.  I'm using the "b43" kernel module from the latest stable compat-wireless patched with a couple aircrack patches (built from my own package in the AUR called compat-wireless-aircrack).  Just so this thread is more useful, here's the card's entry as per #lspci -vvvnn:
