this has been discussed before but couldn't we remove a few headers in the forum?

here are a few examples:

Announcements: Could be merged with Arch Discussion
Board Discussion: Could be merged with Arch Discussion
Documentation Discussion: Could be merged with Arch Discussion
Security Advisories: Could be merged with Networking, Server and Security
Installation: Could be merged with Newbie Corner

What do you say?

I agree with the above.

Security Advisories: Could be merged with Networking, Server and Security

Quite like there being a separate security advisories forum. I say keep it.

Installation: Could be merged with Newbie Corner

I say keep Installation, and get rid of Newbie corner. I think it's then better to expect users (new or experienced) to post to the appropriate group. So, a newbie problem with X and an "experienced" problem with X should both be in the same forum, rather than the newbie one being in Newbie Corner. (Does that make sense?!)

good that someone else thinks the same as me, it's hard to know which place to look when you are in a hurry,
maybe it's better to start from the top with the urgent stuff also,

what is the difference between arch discussion and linux discussion? Talk on this forum about linux, would most likely be related to arch. If not, then it might be better served being in off topic.

and...Arch problems is kind of negative. Maybe.."Arch Help" would be better. I also think a seperate section for networking help would be good. Networking could be associated with either workstation, or server, or installation, so it makes sense to split it out.

that looks great cactus, maybe you and rasat can fix it,

there is also "laptop" and "other languages" , I think we can ditch both of those,
laptop issues could go under other topics and other languages are not very likely to get help here,

this will bring us down to 12 from 21,

i think laptop was a recent addition to fulfill a requested need. It might be nice to keep it around.

yes, that's ok to keep laptop, there are a few specific problems with those, acpi and wireless,

Where to post pkgbuilds now? "Making packages" isn't realy appropriate, what about its own forum for that, "Packages"? (With a sticky on top explaining AIR, AUR, what will be, what would be and what should be. ;-)

And keeping kernel/hardware issues one thread may be good.

I sugest we do this discussion/planning with the help of wiki.

We are dealing with 60,000 posts and to merge/move any forum is not a problem but once done its difficult to redo. Example, earlier we had Multimedia forum and was merged with Workstation. The Workstation got too many types of topic and now Multimedia is back.... but all old topics are still in Workstation. To move them among 5,600 topics, will take time.

Keep in mind, this forum is not only for you (current users) but also for new users who come after you expecting to find solution to their questions with the help of browsing and search.
This forum is also a media (PR) presenting the public what Arch does and can do.

In wiki when adding a new forum also include a short description.

You could start with the following merges (I consider them safe):

Linux Discussion -> Off-Topic (LD is low-traffic, no problem here)
Newbie -> Installation
Making Packages -> Pacman (these two are really related, they should be together)

It doesn't really matter; not everybody will be happy with the results no matter what. This discussion will always come up again and again. Same as GUI pacman.

I could never figure out what the difference between 'package configuration' and 'making packages' was.

There will always be a Newbie Corner forum. 'No stupid questions here' is important for a lot of users!

How about having a "Package Upgrade Conflict" forum? There has been talks having a "roll-back" system whenever an upgrade fails, but oldtimers prefer instead to check the forum before upgrading. A forum for this would help.

There is some duplication there, perhaps, but all the listed projects (apache, vsftpd, php, bind) should actually probably go into Networking, Server, and Security. However, the contents of Package Configuration should probably be divided between this and Workstation, since a lot of workstation packages go there. What say, Rasat? (you da boss )

the version in the wiki looks pretty good now,
it makes sense to start with installation and workstation from the top,
that's the most urgent matters,

how is it going with the theme Dusty? You've been working on it for years now, must be a bloody good looking one when it's done,

I see, well it's the same for me, arch just works so there is not so much to post about,
I've been coding instead,
ftp program, frontend for mplayer and editor, all written in pygtk,

you said you were looking for a ftp klient to kde,
python got built-in ftplib so you can pretty easy write one yourself,
I don't know anything about pyqt but I think it is working atleast,

Its understandable when Arch has matured and there are no longer problems requiring long discussion. Now its more about usage and helping new users to get into Arch. For oldtimers there is not much to do when there are many willing to share/help with their first experience.

It was expected, therefore I took interest in the user contributions to keep focusing in programming and have a place to discovering new things.
