Installing arch on a single partition with existing partitions[SOLVED]

Hello,

I'm having problems as a first time Arch user. Just wondering if someone could assist me please?

My hard drive currently contains windows XP and Suse Linux on a duel boot.

I have cleared a partition sda2 for Arch and formatted it as /arch

When I get to the partitioner in the installation I can't figure out how to simply mount this partition as / and then countinue to install Arch

In the Beginners Wiki it says you can manually partition with another prog, then go straight to "Mount partitions" - but I don't get this option on my menu

The partitioner also doesn't appear to have a flag to indicate what partitions will be erased and which will remain untouched which scares me from going further without getting advice here first.

I am planning to use my existing swap and /home partitions, so simply want to know how to install arch on my /arch partition

Many thanks

Wait. You said you have two partitions containing windows and Suse respectively, but then you said you cleared the partition sda2.
That means you deleted an existing partition. Hopefully, it's the Windows partition. smile

Anyways, I am not sure what you mean by "formatted it as /arch".
Have you tried manually creating a separate partition for arch using fdisk instead?

Re: Installing arch on a single partition with existing partitions[SOLVED]

Do the first steps as usual:
* Select Source
* Set Clock

Then you select:
* Prepare Hard Drive

Now, if you already partitioned the harddrive, you can skip
    * Auto-Prepare / Manually partition Hard Drives
and go straight to
    * Manually configure block devices, filesystems and mountpoints.

This is where you specify /dev/sda2 as your root partition and pick a filesystem.

Then proceed installation as normal.

Yes, sorry I should have said... The one I deleted was another Windows partition.

Thank-you.

I will try this tonight and report back on how I get on.

Not clear what "formatted as /arch" is. I am assuming you created a / (root) partition at the very minimum. You may have to create a swap too, but you can also use the swap that you might have created for your SuSe installation.

Read the Beginners Guide on the Wiki. Follow it verbatim and you shall see the light !!!

Re: Installing arch on a single partition with existing partitions[SOLVED]

Working fine now thanks.

Yes, I'm using my existing swap and /home partitions and edited my current GRUB settings. I've got the Beginners Guide printed out, but that bit I found a little confusing.

When I formatted my sda2 I mounted it to /arch as I thought it might be handy to be able to access the config files from Suse should the worst had happened. When running Arch it is of course mounted to "/" - my bad for the confusion there.

Everything seems to be working apart from the sound but I haven't started with Xorg, etc just yet. Lots of fun lies ahead no doubt.

Best regards

I never heard the test sound, but my sound seems fine in kdemod. This Arch distro is so easy to use and everything seems to work! Excellent stuff.
