Cannot Install on Toshiba L505

I have the Toshiba L505 with Intel processor. When trying to install it will hang at kernel_thread_helper. If I select acpi=off it will go through the install process until it get 93% and hangs on hardware detection. I am assuming it has something to do with the Linux kernel because I have tried other distros -- Mint, Ubuntu, PCLinux and they all do the same thing. Help please.

There may be a fix for you at the bottom of this thread: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/472183

Re: Cannot Install on Toshiba L505

I'm using a L505D-S5983 right now, albeit without any ACPI functions (64-bit Arch). acpi=ht is the kernel line, which seems to enable both CPU cores but disables saving/changing the system clock to hardware clock ("/dev to rtc()..."). "Show all posts" in profile will lead to babble about the issues with ACPI. /after one of these...

For the install I had had some issues & had to redo it one or more times, and I think "acpi=off" + "noapic" allowed it to install all the way.

Re: Cannot Install on Toshiba L505

Thanks for the help...I will keep trying. I have used Arch for the past year or so and done numerous installs but this is the first machine that has given me the problem.

Re: Cannot Install on Toshiba L505

I found the line "acpi=ht will be removed in Linux-2.6.35" in the kernel log this morning. So, after a quick search... no more hyper-threading.

Re: Cannot Install on Toshiba L505

That is good news. I looked at your link. Wonder how long before that is available. Thanks!

Re: Cannot Install on Toshiba L505

It's good? They're removing a function, not adding one?
I need to re-read that?? yikes

acpi=off, which am now using (since none of the other options shown work (the system just freezes on a black screen right after the grub screen post-selection ends), results in just one CPU of the two being seen, and higher heat levels (75 C instead of the usual 68).

I did a BIOS update to 1.10 for this laptop but no ACPI change. Only notable change is that the non-existent HDMI soundcard is no longer listed.

Re: Cannot Install on Toshiba L505

My problem is I don't know how to make the changes when I can't even boot the Arch install disk. I previously had a different laptop and was able to install without any problems. But if I can't even boot the install disk I can't do anything.

Re: Cannot Install on Toshiba L505

I was going to install Arch on my gf's L505. But looks like I will have to research the whole thing before going forward.

Re: Cannot Install on Toshiba L505

OK, my bad...I did get it to install using acpi=ht but I understand this is not good. So what would be the correct patch or is there just not a route in Arch?

Re: Cannot Install on Toshiba L505

Try it now; as of 2.6.35 ACPI works [thus far from what I have seen] flawlessly.
