Why not use xterm+gimp? If you can't run the program under xterm, you could use some PC emulator like vmware or qemu (under X).

Yes, AFAIK this is the only way to take screenshots of operating system (for example Windows) installation. Run it in a window and use the host os to take screenshots.

why don't you just start /arch/setup off the cd when you have X up and running? ;p
anyway, using a serial or SSH connection on a seperate box that runs X is the easiest way i guess.

if its an installer, you can always chroot and actually install on, say, a /home partition or something
