Network Manager doesn't show available wireless connections

I have Arch set up on a laptop. I've used it for about a month around the house without a problem. Today I did a little "road tripping," and was surprised to find that network manager wasn't showing me any wireless connections. There were no errors shown, just no connections were offered when I went to places that I know have wireless available. My experience with other distro's is that network manager will show a sidebar with the available wireless connections and let me choose whether I want to connect or not. But when I went into a coffee shop or restaurant, nothing showed up offering anything. I took a look at the network manager and wireless wiki's and didn't see anything that I might have missed during the installation. What tells network manager that there are wireless networks available?
