[SOLVED]After yesterday's upgrade screen problem

So, yesterday i have upgraded to the newest kernel and udev. Now, the problem is that (i have XFCE) when laptop goes into "switch off screen" mode (in xfce4-power-manager) i cannot recall the screen back to normal (it remains black). I have to suspend it and wake it up in order the screen is visible/normal again (haven't tried to just kill X).

Re: [SOLVED]After yesterday's upgrade screen problem

An upgrade to linux-3.1-4 is also unkind to my Intel GMA 4500MHD video card (in an HP 2730p).  Screen flicker / wierdness.  Tried an experiment, booted with a liveCD/USB of shiny new Fedora 16, also using kernel 3.1 -> same issue.

Re: [SOLVED]After yesterday's upgrade screen problem

This kernel version really is a mess - beside normal screen it removed my "Master Front" channel in alsa. I guess is a cross-distro problem. What udev version is fedora 16 using?

Canb you post some logs so that we can compare them.

P.S.

I have INTEL GMA 4500M graphic card

Re: [SOLVED]After yesterday's upgrade screen problem

Hey Shark,

I have since, with some difficulty, managed to downgrade my kernel back to 3.0.7-1, so unfortunately, I don't have any logs to share.  FWIW, I allowed the latest udev (175-1) to proceed, no issues, while F16 is using udev-173-3.fc16.x86_64.rpm.  I'm quite sure it's a kernel issue, with all the talk of KMS, and all the work that's been done on the intel driver.  I guess the kernel upgrade will have to wait.

Re: [SOLVED]After yesterday's upgrade screen problem

I have installed kernel from the testing repository and the problem still persist.

Re: [SOLVED]After yesterday's upgrade screen problem

hi,

I have the same problem(intel Corporation Mobile 915GM). And I found the following can solve the half of the problem
-----------
Section "Device"
    Identifier    "Device0"
Driver        "vesa" # <---replacing intel by vesa
EndSection
--------------

But after "kill X", the screen of the framebuffer becomes quite horrible as showed in the pic.

Re: [SOLVED]After yesterday's upgrade screen problem

The problem still persist with linux-3.1.2-1 and linux-3.1.3-1. Has anybody find the solution yet?

No, it's not. You have some problem with acpi/whatever else. HP 2530p here (same intel gma) -- no problem.

Are you having issues with backlight or resume from sleep?

Also, "yesterday's upgrade" really means nothing...

Re: [SOLVED]After yesterday's upgrade screen problem

heheh, i just solved my problem. You gave me an idea that acpi may be wrong. So i have remembered that in menu.lst i have this line:acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor. I removed it and everything works fine now.
