yes, gaming is the main reason of the born of MATE.
If you have nvidia, and do a recently update, try reboot first.
Why so? There is a dark theme for each

I fixed it recenlty.

Yes indeed, I loved playing with Gnome2! I'm playing with PlayOnLinux(.com), a graphical frontend for wine in Mate and both games that I love, Age of Empires 3 as well as Company of Heroes are working perfectly with the proprietary nvidia-driver and wine-version set to 1.3.33(the newest one).

Thanks all that responded. First thing in the AM, Mate is going on my machine.
Once you installed Mate, did you uninstall Gnome 3?
One other question, what is the preferred way to install Mate? through AUR, or one of the 2 Mate repos mentioned in the Wiki?

hey gang,
having some trouble installing mate. I tried from AUR, but kept getting errors saying I didn't have package "xyz" (mate-common was the first one) installed.
I then tried adding the Mate repo:
[mate]
# Contains official mate desktop packages
Server = http://matsusoft.com.ar/repository/archlinux/mate/$arch
and when I run pacman -S mate, I get the following:
libmateweather-201... 13.8M 53.3K/s 00:04:24 [######################] 100%
error: failed retrieving file 'mate-backgrounds-2011.11.16-1-any.pkg.tar.xz' from matsusoft.com.ar

warning: failed to retrieve some files from mate
error: failed to commit transaction (failed to retrieve some files)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
Am I doing something incorrectly?

per this link: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MA … plications
I cannot run mate-conf, or any of the extras, I get:

yet, caja works.

For some reason the 64-bit repo has the current and the older versions present: ftp://tridex.net/repo/archlinux/mate/x86_64/

I currently have mate installed, uninstalled gnome 3. when I uninstalled gnome 3, I lost sound in mate. Any way to get the sound back?
I checked alsaconf and alsamixer, all channels are on, and my SB card is the default.

sorry for the mess
about sound, install mate-applets, and then add it.

Thanks, this gave me the volume applet, however, still no sound. I think I need to get into the "Volume control" and when I click on that through the volume applet, I receive an error:
Failed to start Volume Control: Failed to execute child process "mate-volume-control" (No such file or directory)
If I do a complete re-install of arch, and then choose Mate as my Desktop Environment, would the volume work then?
I don't think this issue is a mate issue, but more of a F'ed up alsa in arch.
hope I can get it fixed without a re-install.

Thanx,
I ran through the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Alsa#Installation
multiple times, everything checks out, just no sound.
went all the way down to the "Configuration" section, which I know I didn't have to go through when I installed Arch a couple months ago.
any ideas?

maybe the problem is pulseaudio. Try with and without, do not forget to reboot.
mate-volume-control is on mate-media package.

Thanks for the reply.
I tried to install mate-media
pacman -S mate-media
and I got a target not found.
Should we be using Mate from AUR or from the other repositories?

ps. Great job so far Perberos!!!

think I just fubared my system. Uninstalled mate, didn't reboot yet, but instead installed via AUR:
yaourt -S mate-desktop-environment
everything looked cool up until:
