Re: X-server not starting after last system upgrade

So I have got it working the hard way: deinstalling xorg and nvidia, with pacman -Rsnc, cleaning all related files I have been able to find, and reinstalling xorg and nvidia from testing, using the kernel from testing too.

Now it is working again, so solved for me.

Did you manually clean a file which you suspect caused the problem, if so what file(s) do you suspect caused the problem ?

Any ideas?

In your kernel.log I noticed these lines:

Nov 11 19:24:54 myhost kernel: [ 23.122161] NVRM: rm_init_adapter(0) failed

For comparison in my kernel.log I have:

...
Nov 15 11:19:07 localhost kernel: [    5.039660] nvidia 0000:00:10.0: PCI INT A -> Link[AIGP] -> GSI 22 (level, low) -> IRQ 22

Not the same IRQ and no NVRM failure.

The Nvidia driver failure happens before the mode validation stage, because nothing appears in the log with ModeDebug on.
The NVRM failure is a track to follow. I found some links on the web about that, but I have not time to search further (from what I read, it could be hardware or BIOS settings). But look at the web yourself please.
Not a clear and easy issue to solve apparently...

Re: X-server not starting after last system upgrade

I just noticed that i can work around this problem by reloading the nvidia module after boot:
# rmmod nvidia
# modprobe nvidia
After that X will start for me.
To me it seems something has changed/regressed with linux 3.1.
I have a GT240 connected via HDMI. I dont have this problem with my GTX460 connected via DVI.

Re: X-server not starting after last system upgrade

I solved my problem with vmalloc=192M, see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=129943
Had i just read my kernel.log i would have solved this right away.

If I understand this concept the right way, the solution you mentioned only applies to 32-bit systems, and I'm using a 64-bit Arch Linux.

Re: X-server not starting after last system upgrade

Recently we got a new kernel (3.1.2) and new nVidia drivers (290.10), and I hoped this will finally resolve my issue, but my hopes were vain. I'm on the edge of making a decision to resign using Arch, as it's totally useless for more than a month. It only occupies precious gigabytes on my HDD, so if no one knows how to help me with this, it will be probably the end of my adventure with this Linux distro.

Below is my "new" Xorg.0.log.

Zibi1981: Have you tried downgrading nvidia and nvidia-utils?

With kernel 3.1.2 and nvidia 285.05.09 I can start X. When I upgrade nvidia to 290.10 I get the "no screens found" error.

Re: X-server not starting after last system upgrade

I just got the same problem here, after a two weeks old upgrade.

nVidia GeForce Go 7600 here.

I "solved" the problem by switching to nouveau :

# sudo pacman -Rs nvidia
# sudo pacman -S xf86-video-nouveau
Tweaked my GRUB entry to remove the "vga=xxxx" kernel option (see the wiki)
Reboot,
Xorg starts fine.

I've got nothing about video drivers in /etc/xorg.conf.d, no xorg.conf, no modules blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d.

Not really solved, but a good temporary solution, until new nVidia drivers are released.

Re: X-server not starting after last system upgrade

I solved my problem by switching to Kubuntu 11.10. It isn't as bleeding edge as Arch, but seems far more stable wink
