i unplugged the NIC that was connected and plugged the cable into the second NIC. the result was that eth0 came up. what was it that caused the "name change" and what can i do to prevent this in the future.

p.s. luckily i did this on the monitoring server in my office first before doing the same thing on the one in the datacenter. none the less the one in the datacenter is waiting for an upgrade and i'd like not to break it.

That entry is outdated, because as far as I know the MODULES array does not guarantee loading order anymore. But it's correct in that udev rules are the way to go for persistent network naming.

Ah, yes, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Rc.conf#Hardware
I was just posting that link every time somebody had a problem with interface names changing 'P

Did some crude fixing:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?ti … did=169847
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?ti … did=169022
It would be great if someone could do the cleanup https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ta … interfaces
