LENOVO SL410  has the platform running smoothly (aside from frequent user issues). LapLinux lists an issue with the headphone jack that I have not verified.

HP elitebook 8460p LG744EA
Arch runs like a charm but there are two annoying issues:

1. backlight doesn't respond to function keys, so I have to manually edit /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness every time
2. System does not wake-up after suspend

Using the latop in a corporate environment, running Gnome 3.

Lenovo Y560.

Everything works perfectly out of the box. Just a little hotter on the CPU since switching from Ubuntu.

I also successfully installed and ran Arch on an HP ZD8000 for testing.
Wireless needed separate drivers for the HP.

Acer Aspier 7740G
everything perfect!
Wireless driver brcmsmac is included in the kernel, but in my case, i need to install broadcom-wl from aur to have wireless speed at 54Mbps. With open driver, it is locked at 11 Mbps.
But broadcom-wl driver is very unstable (freezes after suspend for example) so it is better to keep open driver :-)

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Picked up a Core i5 based Fujitsu LH531 14" notebook at Fry's the other day and threw ArchLinux on it.

Only two things didn't work:

1. Synaptics Touchpad:
fixed by adding "i8042.nomux" and "i8042.notimeout" to the grub command line.

2. Bluetooth
don't have a fix for this one yet; however, I've read reports that installation of kernel 3.1 fixes it.

everything runs fine. sometimes the wlan connection gets dropped, but if the connection works, i have a good speed and latency.
the thinkpad_ec module can't be loaded, but i don't think that this is important.

if you buy this laptop without an os, linux is a lot easier to install, than windows ^^ (everything worked out of the box in arch, in windows, nothing worked)

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I run Arch x86_64 on my own ThinkPad X220. Also with Arch (i686) i gave new life to a Compaq 6910p.
In both cases everything works out of the box or with little hacking.
Arch system simplicity and stability, package manager ease of use , large sw repositories, great documentation and forums are the main reasons i turn to Arch.
Used to work with IceWM, using gnome3 right now.
Planning some LTS installation. Will keep you informed.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Asus 1215b-PU17 with AMD E-350 + ATI Vision 6310. Sort-of works. Lack of suspend to RAM is a major frustration/time-waster, especially since the mobo supports up to 8GB of RAM.

Make---Model-----------Wifi---Bluetooth----Keyboard---Suspend
Asus---1215B-PU17---Y------Unknown----Y----------------N---------

Edit 14 Dec 2011: had to blacklist sp5100_tco to prevent unpredictable system hangs which began happening suddenly.

You need to hold down ESC to get the boot media selection prompt to come up reliably during boot--it's like a 300msec window to get into the BIOS/media selection. Otherwise you're going to waste half an hour while Windows 7 installs.

Works OOTB/default settings/painless
Brightness Fn keys
Trackpad  gestures (two-finger scroll, etc.) (but see below)
cpufrequtils works with default BIOS settings with powernow-k8 module. Will not work if "cool'nquiet" is disabled
Catalyst driver (but see below!) from unofficial repo

RTFM not OOTB works:
Broadcom wireless card, supported with vanilla kernel brcmsmac and blacklisting bcma modules EDIT: Untested on WPA1/2-Enterprise wifi.
Other Fn+ keybinds
Sound with ALSA. EDIT: clear out any configs, run alsaconf as root, and use ~/.asoundrc to prioritize sound card over HDMI. Or just remove HDMI module.
Disk parking needs to be adjusted via hdparm

Works but it's def. not in the manual
Trackpad is almost unusable in lunix and Windblows--a piece of metal tape contacts one of the bolts/bolt standoffs. I took off the palmrest and peeled it back and it's worked since, but it's def. "at your own risk"

FUBAR
suspend to RAM, with Catalyst and radeon. Resuming from RAM kills even alt + sysrq keybinds. s2disk works fine.

I also use Asus EeePc 1215b with AMD E-350 and have similar problems.

Which wifi networks did you try? My laptop connects well to Wpa2 PSK network with brcmsmac driver (and blacklisted bcma). But this driver hangs my Arch64+Gnome 3 trying to connect to Wpa2 Enterprise network. Hopefully Broadcom wl driver works good (I have built it myself from the sources, but perhaps the AUR version will also be good).

I also have this problem. I use xf86-video-ati, 64 bit. In principle, if C6 option in BIOS is disabled suspend to RAM seems to be working. I tried to repeat series of sleep / wake tests many times. Normally all works good, but once it did not waked anyway... But the main problem is that even after the one sleep / wake cycle I can not reboot the laptop. It looks like the HDD is not initialized by BIOS and computer does not boot at all. It is not enough to switch it off. Laptop do not starts until the battery is unplugged for a second.

Everything works after a few tweaks. I have to use b43 for wifi eventough the wiki says I should be good to go with wl.

  • I haven't even tested sound yet, so I'm half expecting another adventure when I try to set that up. That's just the kind of proprietary cheap-ass laptop this is.

Buy something else.

5750G here, a slightly different version of the same model. Just installed yesterday so I can't comment on long term running. Thanks for the tip on the psmouse-elantech drivers, though, the first thing I always do on a laptop is turn the touchpad off and I was having trouble smile

No problem with wireless here (it's an Atheros card), and no SATA mode errors that I'm aware of - although it does warn of invalid iomem size, which Google tells me is due to a slightly outdated idea of "valid" iomem sizes in this case and nothing to worry about.

Sound was easy but I had to install Bumblebee from the AUR to make the dedicated Nvidia card work (when will I learn to stop buying Nvidia products? I hate them on Linux). That's because of the Nvidia Optimus technology - there's an integrated Intel controller which works OOTB but if you want more power you need Bumblebee to tell the computer to switch between them. It wasn't difficult to install, just tedious with AUR dependencies.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Mine is a Dell Latitude D600.

This little thing is a a very modular tank, and runs almost every OS I throw at it perfectly. On Arch, it only needs a little configuration to enable Radeon graphics, Broadcom wireless, and sleep on lid close. It boots in 20 seconds, too.

I'm still having trouble getting CPU frequency scaling to work, so it's stuck at 600MHz instead of 1.4GHz. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though; it does keep the temp down. Apparently, the D600 has a problem similar to the ThinkPads, where if no battery is present, the BIOS locks the frequency at the lowest settings. It's overriden with "processor.ignore_ppc=1" on your kernel boot line, if anyone's wondering.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I'm running Arch on a Samsung X360 without problem. I've been using a Debian Sid for more than 10 years, so this laptop had been running it from its first run.

The only problem I found after the migration is that the CPU temperature in Arch is a bit higher than in Debian, which may be related to the HZ=300 in Arch vs HZ=250 in Debian, the fact that I ran Debian in i386 and migrated to x86-64, or to the updated version of GNOME (it was 3.0 in Debian and is 3.2 in Arch).

Although it is a minor problem, I am interested to know the exact reason, so if anybody knows it right off the bat, please let me know. Thank you.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Would it make sense to tabulate these results in the Arch Wiki? Something along the lines of:

|brand | model            | wifi | bluetooth | keyboard  | suspend | ...  | general comments                                          |
|--------+-----------------+------+------------+-------------+----------+----+----------------------------------------------------------|
|Apple | macbook 5,1 | yes  | yes          | yes            | suspend | ... | wireless required use of broadcom_wl driver |

etc

I'm extremely pleased with Arch on my X61 and I did very little in the way of additional configuration. I, for some reason, even chose to use KDE, which I haven't done in years, and had no problems installing and configuring. Wireless was simple with the card being recognized immediately. Sleep works exceptionally well, whether by closing the lid, or function key. The only other distro that has worked as well for me on this product has been Debian linux...well to be more accurate, Linux Mint Debian Edition...AMD 64. Both seem solid as a rock. I have two X61's, one running Debian and this one running Arch.
