Decoding base64-encoded SSL files

There is a way to decode the base64 contents of .crt, .key, and .pem files to display human-readable text, but I can't remember how to do it.  "base64 -d" doesn't work cause there's some garble in there.  I think I used the openssl command for this.  Anyone know? smile
