Carl broke my wireless again

I did a Pacman -Syu last night. After rebooting, I have no network connection.

I am using a carl9170 USB dongle. Before August, I used ar9170usb and that worked fine. I have had nothing but problems with Carl.

lsusb shows my dongle correctly.

modprobe carl9170 appears to load the driver correctly.

iwconfig does not show my wireless device.

Are you suggesting this should have been posted in a different forum?

Perhaps my topic was a little too "clever" and not as anal as everyone on this forum, but the same could be said of your flowchart.

I am asking for help. I have no Internet or other network access within miles of the affected PC. Near as I can tell from his post, Xyne is flaming me.

The flowchart is tongue and cheek, yes, but it is meant to help you.

Look at your logs, dmesg, etc. What do they say? If there is a problem loading the driver, or with the card and the driver, it should show up in the logs.

Well, I am not sure if "I need a package", "something broke" or this is a "configuration issue".

Following "I need a package", I can't search with pacman. Even if I knew what was missing, I don't have Internet access.

Following "configuration issue", I have already checked the wiki, forum and Internet. I don't know of any other documentation (man pages, etc?) That takes me to "Post your question" which I did. If he feels my topic is too "tongue in cheek", then I take issue with his flow chart.

Following "something broke", I don't know really know which package caused the problem. I don't want to downgrade everything back to where I was. I don't know (or know how to tell) if it is an upstream issue. This looks like it only affects me (or I'd see it on the forum and the Internet), so I don't see a point putting it in the bugtracker.

As I mentioned have you looked at your logs? Usually there will be some kind of indication in the logs that something failed which would help in diagnosis of the issue.

Sorry, I thought it would be clear from the <offtopic> tags of my post.

It's Arch tradition to blame anything that breaks on Allan. My post was just a joke suggesting that you replace "Carl" with "Allan", whence the <offtopic> tags.
I only included the flowchart link because of the part about blaming Allan. As lifeafter2am correctly points out, it is tongue-in-cheek, although downgrading for now might actually be a good temporary solution.

I understand that you misinterpreted my post, but the "anal" remark was still unwarranted. I don't know who you've had to deal with on here so far, but in my experience the majority of people here are friendly and helpful.

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/carl9170 says you need firmware, which is linked there. It doesn't seem to be part of the linux-firmware package, which Arch uses. Download it, put it in /lib/firmware and reboot or rmmod and modprobe the module.

Sorry about the misunderstanding. I thought you were saying my post was off topic.

This is indeed a firmware issue, not sure how I missed that:

[ 2.794669] usb 1-2: failed to find compatible firmware descriptor.
[ 2.794726] usb 1-2: failed to parse firmware (-61).

Unfortunately, unlike last time, just overwriting the firmware file does not fix the problem. There are 2 firmware files on:

Along with the firmware already on my system, that is 3 different firmware files, none of which work.

Do I need to track down a different firmware version? Should I find a different version of the Carl driver that works with the firmware I have? Should I try to get these out of the arch repositories, or directly from linuxwireless or elsewhere?

FYI - I never said anyone in specific was being anal - I said I was not being anal enough.

Have you tried this firmware: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=44102
There is also another carl driver on there: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=44100

Just shooting in the dark here though, hopefully I am helpful.

It is recommended that you install everything you can via pacman, whether it is from the AUR or the repositories.
