visudo freezes

I noticed everything isn't fine when I tried to modify the sudoers file by visudo:

1. keyboard input lags, when I type something it takes at long time to see it on the screen.
2. When I push enter nothing happen
3. Cannot delete anything I typed
4, When I close visudo it crashs and prints my screen full of text: : at EOF

Those thinks also happen when I try to modify crontab rules by crontab -e Could be same problem?

Anybody?

Re: visudo freezes

From the man page: There is a hard-coded list of editors that visudo will use set at compile-time (...)

Re: visudo freezes

Try to see the xorg logs and see if there are any errors when visudo crashes. If there are, post them here.

and I hope you have vi/vim installed

I too experience the first two issues, but I thinks it's the way the editor works. 'Enter' moves to the next line and there are no EOF errors.

That's what I was saying in my first post.

Re: visudo freezes

PHEW!! I'm soooo glad I found this post!!
My tty was going nuts every time I attempted to invoke visudo. Even this was progress, as last night I was completely locked out, with the message;
visudo: /etc/sudoers: Read-only file system.
Having convinced myself it was disk errors (due to some hard-resets I've had to do), I thought I was stairing down the barrel of a complete re-install !
There's nothing quite like the feeling of relief you get when over-coming a hurdle that seemed so impossible!

Welcome to the forums, plenty, and thanks for the feedback.

However, this thread is getting old. Have a look at our Forum Etiquette, esp. the section on Necro-Bumping.
