Trying to get the 3G SIM in my laptop working

I'e put a 3G SIM card into my thinkpad X201 and tried to get it working by following the instructions here: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Qualcomm_Gobi_2000

Having copied the firmware to /lib/firmware/gobi I then tried unloading and reloading the qcserial module in the hopes of seeing more TTYUSB devices appearing under /dev - with no success.

Am I missing something?

Also, once I have got this working, what do I need to do in order to get networking working through this?

Re: Trying to get the 3G SIM in my laptop working

I have not that hardware, thus only some general suggestion. Look in the output of lsusb, is there a 05c6:9205 device? If so, then you probably miss some udev rule in order to autocreate the device.
If there is no such device, then perhaps the firmware is not compatible with the present kernel...
About the connection, the thinkwiki page seems to give lots of informations.

I dont know your device, but check if you have installed this optional: http://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra … emmanager/

Re: Trying to get the 3G SIM in my laptop working

I have a 05c6:9204, but not an 05c6:9205 device listed when I run lsusb - so, perhaps, the firmware is incompatible.  Which is most disapointing.

Thanks. I installed that and ran it as root.  It told me that it had loaded a bunch of plugins and then did nothing.  How does you go about using this?

Re: Trying to get the 3G SIM in my laptop working

I installed gobi-loader from AUR (how did I miss that before!?) and I now have the expected ttyUSB* devices - so I think it's now just a question of configuring it for my network.

Thanks for all the help

Re: Trying to get the 3G SIM in my laptop working

I provides udev for 3G modems. You usually don't have to do anything, but your connection manager (networkmanager here) then identifies the 3G devices by itself. Try networkmanager with it.
That is from your link. Your firmware should be fine I guess:

Technically, the firmware loading interface is exposed over USB as id 05c6:9204 which can be accessed as a character (ttyUSB) device under Linux using the qcserial driver. After successfully loading the firmware, the device switches to the USB id 05c6:9205 and exposes three character devices (ttyUSB).
