Greetings ![]()
I have a very irritating issue that seems to have appeared after an update I performed the other day, perhaps something to do with the new kernel?
Anyhoo, I'm running XFCE as my DE and upon waking my machine from suspend, it doesn't put out any picture to my dual monitors, extremely frustrating as I tend to keep my machine suspended most of the time when I'm not using it.
I have to keep forcing a reboot, after which the display output functions fine, however as soon as I suspend and then wake from it, it's the same issue again ![]()
I'm on a x86_64 system with kernel 3.1.5-1
Output of
uname -ris as follows:
3.1.5-1-ARCHAny help on this would be greatly appreciated, this is unfortunately a big issue for me. Please advise if there is any further information that might help resolve this, many thanks! ![]()
*EDIT: RESOLUTION*
Thanks to grandmouse for pointing out that my kernel line needs 'hpet=disable' I can now suspend again!

I remember having the same problem a while ago. I just switched tty to the right one.
Something like Alt-F7 or what is right for you

Thanks for the reply gerdloos ![]()
Unfortunately switching tty's didn't work.
Along with no picture being put out, my mouse wheel doesn't light up, which it usually would, perhaps indicating that none of the peripherals are functioning ![]()

Anybody have any idea at all? I know this thread hasn't been up long but this issue is really starting to annoy me ![]()

What are you using to suspend? pm-utils?
If so, have a look at this section of the wiki article on it.

Thanks for the reply n0stradamus ![]()
I believe I am using pm-utils to suspend, I certainly have it installed, however it's been a very long time since I first set up my machine.
I did try the script from the wiki page you linked, unfortunately my issue is still present ![]()

Did you do everything the article says? It requires you to install vbetool and name the file a specific way. This section is a litte strange to read, true^^
I've found another hint in the wiki article here:
It advises to remove the autodetect hook from the HOOKS array inside mkinitcpio.conf.
Try that out, but be sure to have at least a fallback image at hand - in case things go wrong ![]()
And if that does not work, have a look at this page where information on workarounds for this problem on different systems is collected: clickme.
Other than that, I'm afraid that I can't be of much further assistance. For me pm-utils worked fine out of the box and since Kernel 3.0 the occasional freezes that i have experienced are gone as well ![]()

I did indeed!
I'm afraid removing autodetect from the hooks array didn't resolve the issue either ![]()
I've had a look at the pages, a lot of these issues seem to be with laptops, perhaps I should have specifiec previously I'm on a desktop using NVidia proprietary drivers if that's of any use)
Really appreciate the help on this so far though n0stradamus
Let's hope someone's got the answer!

And you did regenerate the ramdisk? I'm always asking because I have made the experience that people just tend to copy and paste tips - no offense ![]()
Well I found another lead on the german forums: Does the same problem occur when you suspend from the commandline? If it does, it may be a BIOS problem. Try updating it.
EDIT: Before you update the BIOS, please tell me whether the suspend from the commandline works. Also remember to undo the changes previously made (delete the script that didn't work)

None taken! I should probably be more clear when sayin 'I did that'
I did regenerate the ramdisk when I tried that.
I'll be completely honest; I have no idea how to suspend from the terminal D:
(And don't worry, I always undo changes I made/delete useless files, housekeeping is very important to me)

xfce4-power-manager locks the screen (extended settings) by default when you resume, just type your password.

If that's the solution I don't know what to say^^
@Starfall: Does the above fix it? If not - you must have installed xfce SOMEHOW, it didn't just appear on your system and began working, did it? ![]()
Please refer to the Xfce wiki page for more info on how to setup xfce. From the info contained there you should be able to reenable console login. Perhaps disabling your display manager (the program that enables you to choose a user and authenticate) will suffice.

I wonder if this is related to the thread from a few weks ago which turned out to be an issue with a kernel update as I recall https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=131353
A lot of people had this issue, not just in Arch either, and it was mentioned again in another thread as well https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=127478
I seem to recall someone saying that they had the blank screen issue when waking the PC up. Might be worth a quick look at the two threads anyway.

@grandmouse: Y'know what, I haven't even tried that! I'll give it a go when I get home, though it's certainly never been the case in the past, this issue only seems to have risen since the kernel upgrade.
@n0stradamus: Aha, of course it didn't appear
I do have quite good knowledge of setting up XFCE and other DE's on Arch, I just meant I couldn't really remember much to do with pm-utils ![]()
@RichAustin: Excellent! Thanks very much for posting these, I'll take a look.
Thanks everyone for all this help, I'm currently at work, obviously earning my money by sitting on the Arch forums... but i'll check when I'm home ![]()

Okay, typing my password and hitting Enter doesn't seem to do anything after waking.
Here are some clarifying points:
My monitors don't seem to detect any input what so ever (i.e they will go to sleep because they're not receiving any signal)
As previously mentioned, my mouse wheel doesn't light up, which it used to...
Attempting to switch ttys doesn't do anything
I'm on a desktop, not a laptop, using and NVidia graphics card, I have an i5 CPU
So, if it might help, could someone please advise how can I go about applying this patch? ![]()
Please ask any questions that you think may help resolve this, it's doing my nut in! D:

This looks more like nvidia vs kms (kernel mode setting). Disable kms or install nouveau.

I would not apply that patch because it just fixes a backlight problem and as your screen goes to powersave mode, that is clearly not the problem.
So you're using the nvidia driver. I didn't think of the drivers causing the problem, I guessed it had something to do with X.
Please try the following steps:
Add the swith agp=off to the kernel commandline. This can be done by editing /boot/grub/menu.lst
Create /etc/pm/config.d/video and enter
DISPLAY_QUIRK_VBEMODE_POST="false"I've got this from the german fedorawiki here. I'ts kind of difficult to debug a problem that I can't even reproduce (I'm using ATI).
Hope that helps!

Thanks for the replies ![]()
I tried using nouveau instead of the nvidia drivers and also disabled KMS, however; no success ![]()
Unfortunately n0stradamus, I tried both those suggestions together and both on their own, however the issue persists ![]()
Here's my bootline in case it's of any help?
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda2 ro logon.nologo quiet fastboot agp=off
initrd /boot/initramfs-linux.imgPerhaps I've placed the agp switch at the wrong point?
Anybody have any idea what else may be causing this?
Perhaps a daemon that's loading at the start? Please see below my daemons from my rc.conf:

Okay... I'm observed closely what's happening upon trying to resume from suspend, I'll explain it as best I can (apologies, I know this threads a wee bit messy):
1. I suspend the machine (using XFCE's gui or pm-suspend)
2. Both my monitors turn off (one sleeps almost instantaneously, the other waits a while to see if there's a signal)
3. I power back on the machine by pressing the power button
4. The slower monitor stays black (not off though) and doesn't search any other inputs, which is what it would usually do in the case of not receiving any signal, so it does look like it's acknowledging some sort of connection. However the other monitor (the quick to sleep one) doesn't detect a signal at all and stays asleep.
5. My mouse's wheel doesn't light up, which it does usually, even very early on in the boot process, just after my BIOS's splash screen comes up, this would perhaps indicate that so long as there's a source of power, the light comes on?
6. The system doesn't respond to any keyboard presses , I've tried typing my password and hitting return, I've tried switching tty's, I've even tried switching tty's and logging in as root and issuing the reboot command blindly (couldn't see anything I was doing obviously) just to see if the system responded, however; no luck.
7. Upon pressing the dedicated 'reset' button on my tower, as soon as the system starts to reboot, the slower monitor starts searching other inputs...
Blegh, sorry for the essay guys, I hope that all makes sense!

Try linux-git or downgrade linux.
Edit: kernel line needs hpet=disable

....if this works grandmouse, i'll have the irresistible desire to kiss your screen-name
I tried building the latest kernel from git, basically I just sat there for a VERY long time whilst it compiled, after which I got a lovely issue advising it couldn't be installed, yay...
Anyways, I'll try disabling HPET on my kernel line when I get home. Thanks for the response! ![]()
EDIT: Yes! Adding hpet=disable to my kernel line did it! Thanks so much for this grandmoudse, you're an absolute lifesaver! I'll edit the original post and add the resolution ![]()
