Re: Problem with Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG

Hello eddy - I am not familiar with your card or the pkg but I have check the cvs entries for the pkgs and can't see anything that would immediately be causing a problem.

I just had some firmware issues with a wirless card, i can see it is giving you an error about the firmware not loading.  Do you have the firmware installed in /lib/firmware?  Are you using hotplug?

The firmware for your card is supplied by Arch in ipw2200 1.0.6-1

Do you have that installed?

There are new pkgs for both firmware and wireless drivers in testing - there is a chance they may help

Re: Problem with Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG

Hi dibblethewrecker. I have the firmware installed in /lib/firmware. I am using hotplug. i have installed the ipw2200 1.0.6-1. My wireless card was working on the 18th i have checked my pacman.conf and have also updated on that day:
...
[07/18/05 19:16] upgraded ipw2200 (1.0.4-4 -> 1.0.6-1)
[07/18/05 19:16] upgraded libdvdcss (1.2.8-1 -> 1.2.9-1)
[07/18/05 19:16] upgraded speex (1.1.6-1 -> 1.1.10-1)
[07/18/05 19:16] upgraded udev (060-5 -> 062-1)
...

I have now installed the packages in testing ipw2200 1.0.6-2 and ieee 1.0.3-2. With this upgrade, the ipw2200 module does not load with this message from kernel.log:
...
Jul 20 22:46:38 pingu ieee80211_crypt: version magic '2.6.12-ARCH SMP preempt 686 gcc-4.0' should be '2.6.12-ARCH SMP preempt 686 gcc-3.4'

Re: Problem with Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG

It looks like your kernel and the modules were compiled from different version of gcc.  Are you using gcc 4.0.1-1 from testing? If so, try to downgrade to gcc  3.4.3-2

Re: Problem with Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG

the versions in testing are compiled gcc4 to be compatible with the next kernel release which i assume is also going to be complied with gcc4 - that is why you are getting the gcc errors.

You now need to downgrade back to the non-testing versions

Once you have done that then we need to work out why your firmware stopped loading

Re: Problem with Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG

hi dibblethewrecker, i have now downgraded the ipw2200 package back to version 1.0.6-1 and the ieee80211 package back to 1.0.3-1. I now as you expected have no more gcc errors. The firmware does not load as stated before.

cheers

Re: Problem with Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG

Nice work, eddy, glad you got it back to normal.  It must be the new firmware pkg you installed on the 18th then surely?

Do you still have the old 1.0.4-4 pkg in your /var/cache/pacman/pkg dir?

Try downgrading to that with pacman -U

Re: Problem with Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG

hi dibblethewrecker, I have downgraded my version of ipw2200 to version 1.0.4-4. Unfortunatly, i get the same error message. I cannot load the firmware. This is from the kernel.log:
...
Jul 21 17:53:14 pingu ieee80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'NULL'
Jul 21 17:53:14 pingu ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.0.4
Jul 21 17:53:14 pingu ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2004 Intel Corporation
Jul 21 17:53:14 pingu ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:02:04.0[A] -> Link [LNKB] -> GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ 10
Jul 21 17:53:14 pingu ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
Jul 21 17:53:15 pingu ipw2200: ipw-2.3-bss.fw load failed: Reason -2
Jul 21 17:53:15 pingu ipw2200: Unable to load firmware: 0xFFFFFFFE
Jul 21 17:53:15 pingu ipw2200: failed to register network device
Jul 21 17:53:15 pingu ipw2200: probe of 0000:02:04.0 failed with error -5
...

Would it be possible to find out what this Reason -2 is?
Could it have something to do with the other updates i have made?

Cheers

Re: Problem with Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG

Ok - reupgrade to the latest firmware and downgrade udev to the previous version you had installed - see what happens then

I serached the error message previously with no luck

Re: Problem with Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG

So there is some good news. I have downgraded udev back to my previous version 060-5. The ipw2200 is at the newest version (not testing). The firmware is loaded without any problems. The problem must  reside in the udev package.

cheers

Re: Problem with Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG

cool!  thanks for being such a capable "customer"

I'll try and find out what the problem is an maybe we can file a bug report.

Well, I can't see any major recent changes in the arch entries so I'd have to assume it is an upstream break in udev.

You can report it as a bug in the Arch bugtracker to put someone more knowledgable on the case otherwise I'd make sure you keep the version that works in your cache and just test the next one when i becomes available - no huge need to upgrade AFAIK

Re: Problem with Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG

Thanks a lot for your help dibblethewrecker.

I will file a bugreport and keep my current udev version.

Cheers mate

Re: Problem with Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG

I have identified the actual problem. The problem was that i was using udev, but also devfs. I have now stoped using devfs completly and now even with upgrading to the latest udev package, the firmware can load. There is no problem with the firmware if using udev without devfs.

Re: Problem with Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG

You have to have devfs=nomount on your kernel line to use udev - it won't even run if devfs is enabled at start up smile  So you've not been using udev at all!  Glad it is fixed now

Yea, i got that now roll I was fooled because i could mount devices using the udev syntax hdax and sdax. Anyway no more probs now.
Thanks for your help
