Fan Noise back again with 3.1.6-1-ARCH

Hi,

I opened this ticket (before) https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=132077 to solve this issue, and now with the new kernel the temperature is back again

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0: +52.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +51.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +52.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

and of course the fan noise is unbearable again..

ERR: nothing changes with the fallback ,was a wrong impression

Please help, or I should never upgrade to other kernels?

slightly o/t but is the fallback kernel the prev version?  I thought it was the same kernel but with the default hooks+autodetect?

The fallback isn't a kernel at all. You're booting the same kernel regardless of which initramfs you choose to boot from.

Re: Fan Noise back again with 3.1.6-1-ARCH

Oh, good to know than something is changing with the fallback ?
I'm booting with (normal)
------
# (0) Arch Linux
title  Arch Linux
root   (hd0,1)
kernel /vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda5 ro i915.modeset=1 apparmor=1 security=apparmor
initrd /initramfs-linux.img
-----
Fallback it's with kernel /vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda5 ro

I downloaded also 3.1.5-1 just in case, however I remember that the temp was around 40°C , after the upgrade it's Up to 50..

I will test with the previous kernel and edit again this post.

Re: Fan Noise back again with 3.1.6-1-ARCH

No guys you were right, with the fallback nothing changes, actually with the previous Kernel I'm at:

Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0:  +44.0°C  (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0:         +43.0°C  (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1:         +44.0°C  (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

keep in mind that the processor is cooling more (with 3.1.6-1 was just as I showed above)

uname -a
Linux ---- 3.1.5-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Dec 10 14:43:09 CET 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

I don't know what but something definitely changes with the new kernel.

tested again today, but I had to switch back to 3.1.5-1 , there is something with the new kernel which sets my CPU on fire.

Oh btw, same thing with 3.3.3-1-ARCH , I don't understand what's wrong and the fan noise is really bad sad any idea it's welcomed.

Re: Fan Noise back again with 3.1.6-1-ARCH

---------------------------------------------
and the same with 3.3.6-1-ARCH ,
---------------------------------------------

I don't understand why this happens ONLY with arch linux.
I suppose something is in the arch kernel patch or something, this happens only with arch, even windows doesn't melt like this the processor!
2 years ago I had a different laptop (Asus) yet the same problem.
Some serious decision should be made by the devels to solve this, I'm sure I'm not the only one with this issue, if you need anything from me (to test, or try) please just reply.
I would be really sorry to install another distro (otherwise I should get my hardware melted) after 3 years of nice experience with arch, and especially after having everything I need from an OS configured under the hood.

Re: Fan Noise back again with 3.1.6-1-ARCH

Have you used a tool such as htop to determine if there are any processes that are using more than their fair share of processor time?

Re: Fan Noise back again with 3.1.6-1-ARCH

I never checked it with htop buthere we have some info (I try keeping it minimalistic)

1) ps -ely
http://pastie.org/3922312
2) ps axjf
http://pastie.org/3922320
3) ps axms (threads information)

htop screens:

So currently as "big" program I'm using only firefox (with only 1 tab opened)

Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0:  +57.0°C  (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0:         +53.0°C  (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1:         +57.0°C  (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

I have a Thinkpad. Linux-CK and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/PowerMan … vingTweaks has significantly brought down the temperature. I am working on cpufequtils. You may give this a try.
