Every time I try and install Arch Linux 2010.05 Netinst .ISO disk on
my newly built PC hardware, I get the following error:
Waiting for boot device...
Error: Boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds...
Falling back to interactive prompt.
You can try and fix the problem manually, log out when you're finished.
ramfs$
The same ISO works perfect on my laptop and other PC's but on my
new $1,000 PC, it doesn't. I can't figure this out. I also tried
the 'Core disk' and I get the same thing as with the 'Netinst'
disk.
I don't know if it's because I have a S-ATA DVD-ROM drive on this
machine. I can boot from disk and see the Arch install options...even
play "Space Invaders". But when I select the install Arch Linux
options, it boots into a 'Live' environment and then hangs on the
error above. Someone please help...

don't use 2010.05 that's so old you cannot even use netinstall with that
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Sorry, I wasn't using 2010 but rather the latest 2011 ISO.

Yeah it's not. I apologize that was a copy / paste error. The point is I've loaded the latest 2011 netinst ISO with a MD5 check and every time I attempt to load it, it fails with the above error. When I'm in that ramfs shell, I type:
devadm trigger
exit
It still fails...

Have you looked into the experiences of other Linux users with the particular mobo you picked up? A large price tag doesn't necessarily guarantee compatibility. My Intel board uses a SATA connection for the optical drive as well, and I never had any problems with LiveCds. For that matter, if you wanted to try and rule the optical drive out, have you tried using a USB flash drive to install?

I've had to either disable AHCI in the bios or use an external USB optical drive to install with newer machines before.
