ip equivalent of iwconf wlan0 essid "ESSID" key "KEY"

Fresh install, did not add wireless_tools, I know ifconfig and iwconfig are depreciated, what's the replacement?

iproute2 and iw. Simple to understand iw documentation: http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Documentation/iw

It seems that neither of these commands are installed in a standard base install. I'm trying to grab the wireless_tools.pkg.tar.xz file but i cant install it.

iproute2 isn't a command, it's a package. ip being it's main tool. And it *is* in the base install. So is iw, you must have some old media if it's not there. Oh, and wireless_tools is also still there. It might be deprecated, but there are drivers for which iw doesn't work (notably ipw2100 and ipw2200, but a few others too).

I just grabbed the latest net install iso, the image had iwfonfig, but the install did not, nor did it have iw. Iw is seems to be it's own package.

The live environment has both wireless_tools (iwconfig) and iw, but neither are in the base group (but they are in core) so you have to manually select them in package selection. Wpa_supplicant is in base and you can use it to set up wireless connections without needing iw/iwconfig  (although some older hardware is unsupported IIRC).

base package group

there are several ways, and it depends on your network setup - check the wiki and/or manpages.
