Folder synchronization over internet

Hi everyone

A friend of mine will have to work at home for a while
with remote access to the office's NAS (Qnap TS-210).

I already set up openVPN and now we have acces
to the NAS.
But the ADSL has a slow upload bandwidth (50K in ftp)
so i wondered if there is way to mirror and sync all the
files between my friend's house and the NAS.

Googling around i found a solution would be using
rsync with a cron job to sync every hour, but i'd like
to sync the files whenever they are created or modified
(two people are working on the same files).

Do you guys have any idea?

I'm not quite sure, but I guess you're looking for a combination of openvpn and heartbeat:

Re: Folder synchronization over internet

Very interesting, thanks
But not what I was looking for, actually.

I'm trying  to synchronize a folder between two machines,
and I know that rsync is able to do that.

The "problem" is: how often will rsync synchronize the folder?
I may use cron to start rsync every hour, but I'd like rsync to
start whenever a file is modified, so the files would be updated
"immediately" on the other machine.

So you're looking for a dropbox replacement? There were threads about that in the forums and on various parts of the internet.
