[solved] network ids (eth0, eth1) switching randomly on every boot

Hi!

I am sure this must have been addressed somewhere already, but I cannot seem to get the search terms right to find out where. Sorry.

My computer has two wired network adapters, which, as I found out just recently (after struggling with it for quite a while), randomly switch names on every boot. Some time one will be "eth0" and the other "eth1", some time the other way around.

eth0 is set as "WIRED_INTERFACE" in /etc/rc.conf and handled by the net-auto-wired daemon, eth1 is handled by wicd. wicd starts up later than net-auto-wired. This configuration used to work, if I recall correctly. I do not remember the time it changed, unfortunately, as I did not understand what is going on until recently.

What is going on? How can I make the identifiers stable? If I can not, how can I have them switch names manually, so that I do not have to bend down and switch the plugs?
