Disable ipv6 in kernel 3.2.6-2

So, from kernel 3.2.6-2, net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1 in /etc/sysctl.conf doesn't work.
How to disable it now?

Sorry for my poor english. Thanks in advance.

Re: Disable ipv6 in kernel 3.2.6-2

I saw that, but that doesn't work any more.

"Note: As of version 3.2.6-2, the Arch kernel has IPv6 support built directly in [1]; therefore, the old ipv6 kernel module no longer exists."

Is there any way to disable ipv6 without recompiling kernel?

Re: Disable ipv6 in kernel 3.2.6-2

Nobody told you to recompile the kernel. Read the wiki again.

That's not what it says.

Re: Disable ipv6 in kernel 3.2.6-2

Could it be sysctl.conf is totally ignored and so is this disabling of ipv6 ?

In my case my settings in sysctl.conf are currently ignored at boot. I can only activate them by running sysctl by hand.

Re: Disable ipv6 in kernel 3.2.6-2

Just wondering if the LTS kernel shouldn't be recompiled with ipv6 built-in so both supported kernels behave the same way in respect to ipv6 since the wiki doesn't mention anymore anything about disabling ipv6 when it is a module.

Ok, ipv6.disable=1 in the kernel line does the job. Still, why is sysctl.conf ignored?

I thought that's what 3.0.21-lts-2 was for?

I had my system up-to-date with respect to the mirror and only looked at what I had installed and as I don't regularly use [testing] I missed that. Sorry for the noise.

# cat /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/all/disable_ipv6

Should be set to "1".

# ip addr

There should be no "inet6" entry.

Thanks a lot, Gcool.
This means sysctl.conf is successfully disabling IPv6 for me.

It's probably not the problem here, but I'm going to mention it regardless to be sure.

Make sure to also check that you don't have any conflicting ipv6 parameters in any of the scripts in /etc/sysctl.d/, since they could then override what you have in your sysctl.conf.

Re: Disable ipv6 in kernel 3.2.6-2

Guys, why are you disabling IPv6 at all? It shouldn't get in your way if you aren't using it, and if it is causing problems, there are better ways to fix that then totally disabling IPv6.

Re: Disable ipv6 in kernel 3.2.6-2

Sometimes you simply cannot modify the network you are connected to or buy a new router. So it might not a bad idea to disable ipv6 if it is not available in your network. E.g. some routers do strange things if the client tries a AAAA lookup etc..

Here is my sysctl.conf

#
# Kernel sysctl configuration
#
kernel.randomize_va_space = 1
# Disable packet forwarding
net.ipv4.ip_forward = 0
# Enable TCP SYN Cookie Protection
net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies = 1
net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_source_route = 0
net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_redirects = 0
net.ipv4.conf.all.secure_redirects = 0
net.ipv4.conf.all.send_redirects = 0
net.ipv4.conf.all.rp_filter = 1
net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts = 1
#net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv4.conf.all.log_martians = 1

ipv6 is commented because I've put it in the kernel line.

@Gcool
I don't have any script in /etc/sysctl.d/

Re: Disable ipv6 in kernel 3.2.6-2

I had the problem my settings in sysctl.conf where ignored. (and they were)
I figured out why that was, and want to share this in case someone else (Still) has the same issue.

I also have UFW installed and activated. and UFW has its own sysctl settings configuration file in /etc/ufw/sysctl.conf
and in it stating:

   Please note these settings override /etc/sysctl.conf. If you prefer to use /etc/sysctl.conf, please adjust IPT_SYSCTL in /etc/default/ufw.

I hope this helps ...

Re: Disable ipv6 in kernel 3.2.6-2

Interesting, for me the change in kernel caused certain pages not to load in browsers (ff, rekonq, konqueror). E.g. google.com or en.wikipedia.org. Setting the parameter in kernel line fixed that. ping6 gave me unknown host, ping gave me correct response. I was able to access google via ip4 address, but not via host name. It seems like the programs tried only ip6. Is that "arch" problem, or does it suggest something wrong is with the network I connect to? Cannot try other network till weekend though.

Re: Disable ipv6 in kernel 3.2.6-2

So this means that /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf can't be used to disable this any longer, correct?

Is there a way that I could have known about this change? I have a feeling that I have just spent the entire day on this because I didn't realise this change had occurred. When I say "could have", I obviously realise that there is some sense in which I could have. I could try to keep up with all the relevant and possibly relevant changes to the kernel and packages I use. But realistically, if I did that, I would not just have wasted a bunch of time today, I would never manage to get any work done at all!

Note that I don't know for sure that this caused the issue I'm seeing but I strongly suspect it killed my internet access at work. I even tried enabling ipv6 because I thought it was disabled. And now I'm going to have to go in tomorrow to check it is working and tell the IT people (who already think I shouldn't be using something as non-standard as Arch) that I didn't realise it was enabled...

Basically, I think the change did the following:
- stopped wired access to the network;
- stopped unencrypted wireless access;
- possibly disrupted encrypted wireless access.
The wired is the real killer. There is something wrong with the wireless network in our area so it isn't possible to get a stable connection at times.

I'm just wondering what I could have done to ensure that I was better informed. I use pacmatic so I get warned about news etc. and there's nothing there that I can see. I always read the output from pacman as carefully as possible and I don't think I missed anything there. I've also been around the forums and haven't seen anything until just finding this thread today. (Of course, I didn't know this was causing the issues so I had no idea what to look for.)

What made this even harder to figure out is that it all works fine on my home network.

I'm assuming, as I say, this is the cause of the problems. However, even if that turns out not to be so, I would have wanted to know since I didn't have ip6tables running because I believed ipv6 was disabled... (I guess since no network I use actually has ipv6 this wasn't an issue for me but it is a laptop so that could change anytime I go use another network.)

Note that I really do wish to know how I could have avoided being ignorant. I thought I was checking the things I needed to check and it seems I'm wrong...

Are there ways which can be implemented on an individual client on the network, such as a laptop? I cannot control the configuration of the networks I use at work and that's where I have the problem. And IT support tell us that ipv6 should be disabled as it will cause problems, particularly for wired connectivity.

Re: Disable ipv6 in kernel 3.2.6-2

For the people who's /etc/sysctl.conf ipv6 settings are seemingly ignored; could you do the following?

1) Apply net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1 to your /etc/sysctl.conf (and disable the "ipv6.disable=1" option in your bootloader config obviously, we're trying to reproduce the issue)
2) Reboot
3) Post the output of the following commands:

# ip addr
# cat /etc/sysctl.conf
# sysctl -a
