Network config at install...no net access?

Hi all,

At the "Configure Network" option during install...it prbes & finds the eth0 card.  Then it asks for the DHCP set up, I select yes but get "Failed to run dhcpcd" while polling DHCP.

I'm connecting via an onboard Intel (R) PRO/1000 (not wireless- RJ-45)... to a Linksys WirelessAccessPointRouter.  I've set up the DHCP on it (for at least 50 clients...only 10 being used).

When I try to manually setit up I get no net access... i.e. "ftp://....:Host name lookup failure" when I try to d/l the packages.

TIA

Re: Network config at install...no net access?

This probably isn't it, but I thought I'd mention it:  If you're blocking MAC addresses, do you have the MAC of that card setup in the router to accept it?

Re: Network config at install...no net access?

Not sure what you mean... but the LAN has a MAC addr.

Is there any commands I can type in to give more info?

Re: Network config at install...no net access?

Sorry if I wasn't more clear.

What I was trying to mention was:

You may not; but I allow only certain MAC addresses to access my AccessPoint/Router.  If I haven't added the MAC address of a LAN card into it, then it won't be able to get an IP and connect.

Re: Network config at install...no net access?

I'll look through the Linksys settings... but does this matter in a Linux box, bcoz there's Win/OSX boxes accessing the same router & my Win box can get a IP addr from the DHCP server ok!

Re: Network config at install...no net access?

Did this system have a previous operating system on it?  Was it on this same network using dhcp before you started installing linux.  If so, then the mac address issue doesn't apply.

Re: Network config at install...no net access?

medicated is correct!  If that system had another OS on it and was accessing the network fine (using the same network card and router) then the MAC address blocking won't be the issue.

If you exit the installer after the NIC is found and the module loaded, and just run

dhcpcd eth0

..What is the error that you get?

Re: Network config at install...no net access?

Yeah... It's actually a dual boot box (WinXP already works fine).

No msg pops up after I enter: dhcpcd eth0!!!

run "ifconfig eth0" and see if you have a valid IP address

Beat me to it, I was about to suggest the same thing.  ;-)

In the first message it appears that dhcp didn't run for some reason.

Re: Network config at install...no net access?

When it ask me "Do you want to use DHCP?" if I select no... It'll ask for the following:
Enter IP add, submask, gateway(optional), DNS...

I've set up Linksys to have 50 IP addr when using DHCP... only ten are being used.

So the IP addr I give it:
IP :192.168.0.124
subnet:255.255.255.0
gateway:192.168.0.1
dns:192.168.0.1

And if I select 'Yes' It'll just gve me "Failed to run dhcpcd"... & "ifconfig eth0" will not give me an IP addr unless I do the above by manually entry!

N.b If I set it to 192.168.0.124 ... and then boot into windows then cmd "ipconfig/all" I find that my IP addr changed to 192.168.0.124!!!

Re: Network config at install...no net access?

If I do a CD install... & get linux up & running will I still run into the same problems or will it be easier to fix & get net access?

That's more or less correct, having DHCP and all.

Yes. It is going to be easier once you have installed. Partly because you could set the IP address in /etc/rc.conf for eth0.
I would advise, though, troubleshooting your DHCP setup, since it should work.

Re: Network config at install...no net access?

you might want to check out /var/log/errors.log.  i had a very similar issue this morning.  i think the network startup script should be more verbose.

this was the error i had:

dhcpStart: interface eth0 is not Ethernet or 802.2 Token Ring

Re: Network config at install...no net access?

Thanks, well I had a look in the log file...

/var/log/errors.log

eth1394:eth1: IEEE-1394 IPv4 over 1394 Ethernet (fw_host0)

Not sure where to look/do now ... there's other errors as well; but to do with

pciehp: add_host_bridge: status 5
pciehp: Fails to gain control of native hot-plug

&

hw_random: RNG not detected

TIA

Re: Network config at install...no net access?

Searched through the forums for the errors in the log file...

pciehp & hw_random ... I can add !hotplug in the rc.conf to stop this err message.  So that's dealt with.

P.S. How do I use pacman to update or install from a CD drive... I was thinking of putting all the updates (pacman, kernel, udev ... etc) & KDE on a CD-ROM & then using pacman to -Syu or -S from CD; is that possible?

Thanks
