[SOLVED]Problem connecting to school network

I do have access to some websites, like the arch-wiki and arch-forums, but some are not, Including our own school's website and the AUR.
the strange thing is that I can ping my school address from the terminal. Is this a browser issue? Or something odd with my internet settings?
I currently use Network manager to configure my network connections. As I am quite new to both Linux and Arch, so please tell me what
information I need to provide as to helping this problem. Thank!

Re: [SOLVED]Problem connecting to school network

Have you tried with another browser? If your school network provides its own DNS, what is the result of nslookup <website>? What is the error message reported by your browser?
I don't think your school is blocking these websites, the AUR belongs to the same domain of the forum and wiki, so they should have a specific firewall rule for it, and it sounds quite strange.

Re: [SOLVED]Problem connecting to school network

Switching browser's don't work. The error message for Firefox is:

If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Chromium tell me:
"Oops! Google Chrome could not find <website>" : P

While the output of nslookup for my school website is:

Server: 140.112.2.197
Address: 140.112.2.197#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.ntu.edu.tw
Address: 140.112.8.116

while the output of nslookup www.archlinux.org is:

Server: 140.112.2.197
Address: 140.112.2.197#53

Non-authoritative answer:
www.archlinux.org canonical name = gudrun.archlinux.org.
Name: gudrun.archlinux.org
Address: 66.211.214.131

Thanks for the rely smile

Re: [SOLVED]Problem connecting to school network

I think you should ask for the proxy configurations in your school.

Re: [SOLVED]Problem connecting to school network

I think this will be a long wait... I wrote a letter three days ago and they haven't replied yet : P

Meanwhile, I want to ask, when I first set-up Arch on a DSL connection, configuring the connection with pppoe-setup
asked me about a firewall setting, could this be what is causing this problem? Where can I go to see the configurations?
And how can I reverse it, if it is what is causing the problem?

Re: [SOLVED]Problem connecting to school network

I've finally found the proxy settings, but by configuring Firefox I don't have access to any websites, the error message displayed is:

Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that can't be found.
Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct.
Check to make sure your computer has a working network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Do you think this is my Firewall's setting problems or my applications problem?

You should see if they have them available online. Go to a computer lab and search their site. Otherwise, find the appropriate IT support and ask them in person or see if they have a handout. If you need proxy settings from them to get things working, so does everyone else. It is very unlikely that the only way they make these available is by replying individually to written requests!

Are you trying to access the school network from off-campus or on-campus?

Re: [SOLVED]Problem connecting to school network

I have already acquired the proxy setting for our school (I've asked the IT support, but found it myself in a obscure corner of the school website), but Firefox then says that it can not find the server once I've set it, though I can can still ping it by the terminal.

I'm trying to link to the server in the dorms, so think it very funny that I cannot browse our school website tongue

Re: [SOLVED]Problem connecting to school network

Sorry guys. This is my bad.
I forgot to switch the configurations in Firefox so that it disables IPv6 connections.
I switched it over and now my Firefox works fine. Thanks to all those willing to give advice!
