What does dmesg say after you plug it in? Is hal running? ps ax |grep hald

hal is running. dmesg output stays unchanged, but after trying another usb port:

Turning off notebook for a while solves the problem (restart is not enough).

Same problem here. Will try to reboot and test like you said now.
