I'm a long time user of Arch on my desktop and I recently got a new laptop that I, of course, want to install Arch on. Now, from experience on my desktop, the x64 release of Arch seems to be the AMD64 architecture (at least on my desktop, which was an AMD processor). My laptop is an Intel processor, which would be problematic if the x64 release were only AMD64.
So my question, in short, is if I install the x64 release of Arch on my laptop, would it be IA64, or AMD64? And if the normal release is only AMD64, would it have a noticeable difference?

I believe that on Arch:
x86_64 = AMD64
Use it and you'll be fine.

IA64 is not used in laptops as far as I know.

Arch x86_64 works fine on an Intel processor. Afaik, AMD was the first chipmaker to produce a 64-bit chip so at the time "x86_64" was simply called "AMD64". It's the same thing as saying "xerox" when you mean "copy", or "hoover" when you mean "vacuum".

@graysky: Thank you for that, I was just wondering before I installed just so I would know my new laptop wouldn't be (relatively) unusable if I installed Arch again.
@hadrons123: I guess I was mistaken then; what would a Sandy Bridge bridge i7 processor have in terms of architecture? Or rather what would it be referred to on a download?

i7 can install either 32 or 64-bit - whichever you prefer.
Please read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64
The very first line says
"AMD64" and "Intel 64" redirect here. For the Intel 64-bit architecture called IA-64, see Itanium.

Alright everyone, thanks for your help. I suppose my problem is solved now.
I'll be off to go get a CD and install Arch on my laptop.
Thank you again everyone!

Pick the netinstall variant.
